Description

STATES A NITE SPRAYING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters lPatent No. 622,664, dated April 11, 1899.
Application filed August 13,1898. Serial No. 688,551. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, More. BILLINGS BRooKs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oak Point, in the county of St. Lawrence and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Liquid-Spraying Devices; and I do herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide a simple, practical, and successfullyoperating liquid-spraying device in which the liquid is forced out in a steady and unobstructed stream or spray by means of airpressure through the medium of an operatin plunger or piston and its connecting parts, which keeps the liquid agitated and thoroughly mixed and prevents it coming in contact with the check-valve and packing.
The invention therefore consists in a device of the above character constructed substantially as shown in the drawing and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which represents a sectional elevation of the spraying device constructed in accordance with my invention, A designates the tank, which may be of any suitable size and shape and is provided with a tight top X and bottom W. Located within this tank A is a suitable cylinder Z, which extends up through the top of the tank and is securely connected thereto and closed at both ends. A tubular plunger or piston-rod B is adapted to work in the cylinder Z and is provided at its lower end with a suitable piston-head comprising the packing D, clamped and held between metal disks G II. The open ends of the tubular plunger or piston-rod B are closed by screw-plugs T, and near each end of the plunger or rod are vent-openings V. The upper end of the cylinder Z is provided with a screw cap E, through which the upper end of the plunger or tubular piston-rod extends, said plunger or piston-rod having a suitable handle O, or a lever, or any other convenient means for operating it. Near the lower end of the cylinder Z is an opening 0 to admit air into a pipe L, which communicates with the interior of the cylinder through the opening. The pipe L extends upward upon the outside of the cylinder Z and thence downward to near the bottom of. the tank A, with which it communicates through its open end, and has a check-valve K and valve-seat S, which may beof any preferred and well-known construction, said valve and seat being located at or near the upper end of the pipe L.
The tank A is provided with the usual dis charge pipe, which extends down through the top of the tank to near the bottom there of and may be provided with a suitable hose or any other appliance for discharge of the liquid. A short tube M, open at its lower end, extends down through the top of the tank and is provided at its upper end with a suit able screw-cap N, which is removed when filling the tank.
In filling the tank the air therein will be compressed by the rising liquid, and when reaching the dotted lines Y Y the lower and open end of the tube M will be closed and sealed by the liquid and prevent the possibility of the escape of the compressed air. The compression of the air will prevent the liquid from rising to a height that would come in contact with the valve and packing.
In the operation of the machine the down ward stroke of the piston or hollow plunger B will draw the air into the same through the upper one of the vent-openings V, and through the lower one of the openings the air will pass into the cylinder Z above the head of the piston or plunger and be forced below the same and up into the pipe L and through the checkvalve K. The upward stroke of the piston or plunger causes the valve K to close, and the suction between the head of the piston or plunger and the tight bottom of the cylinder causes the leather packing D to leave the under side of the clamping-disk G, and thereby allowing the air to pass down between the head of the piston or plunger and the inside wall of the cylinder and through the usual openings in the leather packing and into the lower part of the cylinder. The downward stroke of the piston or plunger causes the leather of the packing D to press against the clamping-disk and forces the air up thepipe L and down into the tank A, thereby causing an agitation which will thoroughly and effect ively mix the contents and force the liquid up and out of the discharge-pipe P.
It should be noticed that both ends of the cylinder Z are tightly closed, which is necessary for the perfect operation of the device.
Any special form of plunger or piston may be substituted for that shown, and any form of piston-head may be used, and any change in the several details of construction that will not affect the successful operating of the device may be made without departing from the principle of the invention; Having now fully described my invention, What I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A spraying device or machine, consisting of a suitable tank, a stationary cylinder located therein and closed at both ends, a hollow piston or plunger adapted to Work in the cylinder and having vent-openings near its top and bottom through which air is supplied to the cylinder, a pipe communicating at its respective ends with the interior of the cylinder and the tank near the bottoms thereof and provided with a check-valve, and a suitable discharge-pipe communicating with the interior of the tank, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
V MOTT BILLINGS BROOKS.
