SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 622,030, dated March 28, 1899.
Application filed August 8, 1898.

Be it known that I, WILL AM L. ANTES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Bed-Bottoms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in spring bed-bottoms.
One object of the invention is to provide a bed-bottom made up of spiral springs having at the top an arm which connects with a similar spring at its side and also with another spring oppositethat is, in front of itsaid springs being attached to a plural number of frames forming sections of the bed-bottom' and the sections hinged or jointed by said connecting top arm of the springs.
Another object is to provide a construction for attaching the base of the spiral springs to a wire frame in such manner as will hold each spring from rotating or turning.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is an edge view or side elevation of the spring bedbottom. Fig. 2 is a top plan of same, only two rows of the springs being shown. Fig. 3 is a detail view of two cross-wires of the bedbottom and base-coil of one spring, showing the open clip in position. Fig. 4 is a section of the parts seen in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a view of the same parts seen in Fig. 3, but shows the clip closed. Fig. 6 shows two views of the open clip.
The wire frame comprises longitudinal wires r and cross-wires s and is made in two sections 0 O. The coil-springs a are like those shown and described in United States Patent to Edgar A. Jones, No. 326,039, dated September 8, 1885. Each spring has its top coil terminating in a straight arm d, projecting toward the adjoining side spring and then doubling back at e in a diagonal direction and terminating in a loop and hook g. front. This feature of the springs is shown in the prior patent referred to.
I make the lowermost or base coil 2' of each spring terminate with a diametrical end h, and each spring is secured to the wire frame as follows: The base-coil 'i rests upon the crossing of the two wires r s. The diametrical end h of the spring takes under the cross-wire s of the frame and has position alongside of the longitudinal wire 7". The open clip j, shaped in plan view like a letter H, with an arched cross-piecej', is then set in position, the arched part taking over the cross-wire s, as in Fig. 3, and the ends of the clip are then bent around both the diametrical ends h and the longitudinal wire 4" and are secured by solder or otherwise. These clip ends thus firmly bind the spring to the wire bed-frame. This construction for securing the diametrical ends'h of the springs by a clip holds each spring firmly and prevents it from rotating or turning.
The parts are so arranged that the last row of terminal loops or hooks g of the coil-sprin gs on one section 0 act as hinges by connecting with the top coil of the first row of springs on the other section 0'. It will thus be seen one section may be turned over and lie upon the other section.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A spring bed-bottom composed of longitudinal wires, 0", and cross-wires, s; coil-springs each having its base-coil terminate with an end, h, extending diametricallyacross thecoil and placed parallel and alongside of one of said bed-bottom wires; and an H-clip which takes over the cross-wires and binds the said diametrical end of the spring and bed-bottom wire, as set forth.
