OIL-PRESS.
SYPECIFIGATION forming part-of Letters Patent No. 621,897, dated March 28, 1899. Application filed Au ust; 5,1898. Serial No. 687,873. (lilo model.)
To all whom it 777 601] concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM P. CALLA-' use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in presses for extracting vegetable oils; and it has for its object the provision of means for keeping thepress-boxes in proper position at all times, to provide connections between the several press-boxes that will not be liable to disconnection, and to strengthen the supports for the walls of the press-boxes.
The first of these objects is accomplished by uniting the columns with the press-plates and lower cast-iron ram-block in such manner as to make it impossible for the said plates and block to move laterally or longitudinally.
The second object is accomplished by means of double-headed links that are secured in slots in each two of the steel press-plates, thus dispensing with the use of nuts.
The third object is accomplished by providing grooves in the lower sides of the press plates into which the side walls are fitted and whereby a great portion of the strain on said walls is taken off of the connecting-rivets.
A still further object of the invention consists in constructing the oil-channels in the steel ram-block in such manner that the oil will not be obstructed by the end wall when the press-boxes are elevated by hydraulic power.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a lower portion of an oil-press having ouriinprovements. Fig. 2 is a section on the line a: 00 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of a corner of one of the steel press-plates. Fig. at is a longitudinal mid-sectional view of a press-box. Fig. 5 is a plan View of a press-box, parts being broken away. Fig. 6 is a transverse section through one press-box and an end elevation of an adjacent press-box.
Fig. 1 contains threepress-boxes in an operative position. These boxes are more clearly 5 5 illustrated on Sheet No. 2 of the drawings, to whichreferenceismade. Thesteelram-block A is. cut from a single piece of metal and has a series of longitudinal oil-channels a, which terminate at one end of the block in downwardly-extending oil-channels a, the latter being continuations of the channels a. These down-channels a are cut into the end of the block a distance substantially as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. By thus cutting the channels a said channels lie in from the extreme end of the block and are inclosed on each side by division-walls a". The walls B, that inclose that end of the blocks when the boxes are moved upward by the application of power, will therefore not obstruct the fiow of oil from the ram-block channels (I. The an gle-bars B, forming the walls B of the boxes, fit i'n flat grooves c in the lower sides of the steel pressplates 0 and are secured to said plates by rivets D. The outward pressure against these walls 13 is so great that ordinary means of attaching have been found inadequate. To suitably strengthen the connection of said bars with the press-plates O, the said plat-es are thus provided with the recesses or grooves c. This greatly strengthens the construction and prolongs the life of the press. The oil as it is pressed from the meal passes through perforations o in the mat E and then enters 8 5 the channels a in the steel ram-block, from whence it passes to the lower end of the pressplate 0. .When in position in the press, the press-boxes occupy uniformly inclined positions, the ends K being on the'lower plane.
H is a brass, malleable-iron, or steel plate attached to the lower side of the steel pressplate 0. Each of the press-plates O has two slots d d,which receive double-headed links G and are closed by plates df, secured by screws 95 e. The links G constitute link connections between the press-boxes of a character that will not become loose, owing to their described construction. Before the hydraulic pressure is put on these links form a series of depend- I00 ing connections by which the boxes are sus pended from the uppermost press-plate, this latter plate being made fast to the press-head (not shown) in a well-known manner. This is an important feature of the invention, as thereby a common annoyance, due to the loosening of nuts and dropping out of the bolts, is avoided. The press-plates O are f urther provided with four channels f near the corners to receive the feathers g on the presscolumns M. The said plates are by these means kept from any lateral or longitudinal movement. The lower cast-iron ram-block I receives the oil from the plates 0. Besides that flowing through the channels ct a, the oil finding its way to other parts of the steel press-plates will also be caught by the said cast-iron ram-block I, from whence it discharges through nozzle I. The lower cylinder J has an upturned rim J and upwardlyprojected open bosses J. Any oil finding its way to said cylinder will be confined therein by the rim J and bosses J. Leading from the opening in the bosses are key-slotsj, into which the feathers g on the columns M fit.
O and O are angle-irons secured to the upper sides and end of the pressplates O to confine the oil and direct it to the discharging ends of said plates.
From the above description it will be seen that the press is very compact and that it is impossible for the boxes to get out of alinement.
Having described our invention, we claim 1. In an upright oil-press, the combination with a series of press-plates, of a series of ram-blocks each of which has a series of longitudinally-arranged oil-channels a terminat- 2. In an oil-press, the combination with a press-plate O, of a ram-block having a series of longitudinal oil-channels terminating at one end in down-channels that lie in, a distance from the end of said block, and an angle-bar, one side of said bar forming an inclosing wall for the end of the block having the down-channels, the other side being connected to the plate 0, substantially as specified.
3. In an oil-press, a press-box comprising a ram-block having longitudinal oil-channels terminating in down-channels at one end that lie in, a distance from the said end, a pressplate upon which said ram-block is supported, the said press-plate having flat grooves in its lower side, angle-irons fitted in said grooves and secured to the said plate, the said angleirons forming the walls around the ram-block, and a perforated mat above the ram-block, substantially as described.
4. In an oil-press, two or more press-plates provided with openings near their corners, the said openings extending from the edge of the plates inwardly, side plates closing said openings, and links inclosed in said openings and constituting connections between said plates, substantially as described.
5. In an oil-press, the combination ofa ramblock having longitudinal oil-channels terminating at one end in down-channels that lie in from said end, a press-plate having grooves c in its lower side, and slots (Z and f in its edges for the purposes specified, and angle-irons secured in said grooves c, and
forming walls inclosing the adjacent ramblock, substantially as described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we hereto affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
