Description

No. 620,985. Patentd Mar, 14, I899. c. E. suuusa &. F. WINDHAM.
TIRE.
(Application filed Aug. 7, 1897.)
(No Modal.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
. CHARLES ERNEST SQUIER AND FRANCIS WVINDHAM, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
TIRE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 620,985, dated March 14, 1899.
' Application filed August 7, 1897.
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, CHARLES Ennnsr SQUIER and FRANCIS WINDHAM, subjects of the Queen of England, residing at London, England, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in or Relating to Tires, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to elastic tires for wheels of vehicles, its object being the construction of a tire which while having the necessary flexibility may be less liable to puncture than those ordinarily in use. Archshaped sections of leather or other convenient material are arran-gedside'by side on a suitable flexible backing, which may be conveniently formed of canvas. The arched sections are arranged close to one another in such a manner as to form a continuous surface. The tire-cover thus constructed is employed either with or without an air-tube of the usual type, the whole being secured to the wheel-rim in some convenient manner. As a protection against excessive wear small metal plates or laminae may be arranged between the arched sections in such a manner that their edges are directed toward the tread of the tire, which when it has been slightly worn will be strengthened against further Wear by the resistance offered by the edges of the laminze. The arched sections can be solutioned'or cemented together, if desired, and also may be solutioned or cemented to the strip of flexible material; but whether or not solution or cement is used for these purposes the sections must be stitched to the backing not only at their edges or tips, but also at their centers.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a portion of the improved tire-cover. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of a single detached arched section, showing one of the laminae.
Like letters indicate like parts throughout the drawings.
A flexible strip A, of length and width sufficient to form a tire-cover, has sewed to it a series of arch-shaped sections B, of leather or other material. Each section B is formed of suitable thickness about its center, being gradually thinned away toward its end, so as to have the appearance of a crescent. These sections are sewed to the backing A not only at their ends, as at B, but also at their centers, by stitches O, which at the centers do not pass perpendicularly through each section from the tread side, but diagonally through one side of each section and into the flexible backing, as shown in Fig. 2. 7
It is important that the sections should be sewed to the backing at their centers as well as at their ends, because they are thereby prevented from rising clear of the backing when in use or becoming detached when damaged, while the diagonal stitching at the center avoids the danger of the threads being chafed by wear, as would be the case if they passed The flexible backing A may be provided with beads, wires, or' other devices at its edges for attaching it to and retaining it on the wheel-rim; but devices for attaching the cover to the rim are not part of the present invention.
If desired, theflexible backing A may be lined with some suitable material to prevent chafing of the air-tube (if such be employed) by the stitches where they appear on the inner side of the backing.
We claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent I 1. A vehicle-tire consisting essentially of a flexible backing and flexible arched or crescent-shaped sections arranged side by side to form a continuous arched tread-surface adapted tocome in direct contact with the ground and the sections being sewed to the outside of the backing and having no direct connection with each other, the said sections having the crescent shape imparted to them before being attached to the backing.
2. A vehicle-tire consisting essentially of a to, and laminae D arranged between said sections as described.
In witness whereof we have hereto set our hands in the presence of the two subscribing r5 witnesses.
CHARLES ERNEST SQUIER. FRANCIS WVINDHAM.
