To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Ainsnosn RICH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Skid Tires, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to non-skid devices for use in connection with vehicle wheels or tires, and has for its primary object to provide a simplified structure which is of comparatively inexpensive construction, which is composed of but few readily assembled parts, all so arranged as to minimize the opportunity for wear, breakage or derangement of the same and which will prove thoroughly efficient in attaining the ends for which it is designed.
A further and particular object of the invention is to provide a non-skid device of that type wherein a chain is extended circumferentially of the wheel upon the tread portion thereof, which is equipped with improved means for preventing lateral thrusts or sliding movements of the wheel from deranging the chain or ground engaging element, and from injuring the various parts employed in retaining the chain on the wheel tread.
With these objects in View, together with others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel formation, combination and arrangement of parts, all as will be described more fully hereinafter, illustrated in the drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a top plan'view of a portion of a conventional form of vehicle wheel and illustrating the application of a non-skid device embodying my invention;

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan view of the foundation strip employed in carrying out the invention; and
Fig. 4: is a sectional view taken upon line H of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, 5 indicates the casing of a conventional form of inflatable tire. Embedded within this casing and extending throughout the tread portion thereof, is a relatively narrow foundation strip 6, the latter being formed of any suitable material, and is provided throughout its extent, with a series of alined circumferentially extending spaced slots 7. Secured upon the outer surface of the foundation strip by rivets or screws 8 are metallic plates 9, the said plates being arranged one between the various slots 7. A stem 10 is retained on the foundation strip by each of the plates 9, the said stems projecting outwardly beyond the tread portion of the tire. If desired, these stems may be headed at their inner ends as at 11, the said heads being firmly bound between the plates and the foundation strip 6. It will be observed that the stems thus arranged are alined with the central axis of the slots 7, and each stem is threaded at its outer end as shown.
Inclosing the foundation strip, plates, and the tread and side portions of the tire, is a finishing ply 12. This ply may be formed of any suitable material, and is provided at its central or tread portion with a series of elongated slots in register with the slots 7 in the foundation strip. It will also be observed that the various threaded stems 10 project through the finishing ply.
The non-skid element used in connection with a tire of this construction comprises a chain formed of a plurality of relatively heavy links 13. The alternate links of this chain are engaged within the elongated slots in the finishing ply and the underlying foundation strip, while the intermediate links lie fiat upon the outer face of the finishing ply, the stems 1O projecting through the central portions of the said intermediate links. It will be observed that the alternate or outwardly projecting links of the chain are firmly held within the registering elongated slots in the finishing ply and foundation stri Ti) firmly bind the chain thus arranged upon the tire to the latter to prevent lateral movements of the chain thereon, clamp members 14 are provided, one clamp being arranged upon each of the outwardly projecting stems 10. The central portion of each clamp is depressed as shown, while the under surfaces of the laterally projecting wings 15 are notched or cutaway as at 16 to conform to the shape of and to firmly seat upon the intermediate links of the chain 13. The outermost extremities of the wings 15 exthe clamps to the chain, and to firmly bind" the intermediate lengths of the chain to the outer surface of the finishing ply 12. When the nuts 18 are tightened, it is apparent that binding action upon the intermediate links will be transmitted to the outwardly projecting alternate links whereby the latter will be firmly seated within the slots in the finishing ply and foundation strip. From this construction, it is apparent that the chain will not only be rigidly bound to the tire and insured against detachment therefrom, but will be proof against dismemberment, either of the tire portions, or of the chain itself.
The outermost portions of the wings 15 of each clamp are raised to provide knobs as shown, the outermost extremities of the knobs terminating even with the corresponding' portions of the outwardly projecting alternate links of the chain. It is thus seen that the clamps operate as efficient ground engaging elements to prevent slippage of the wheel.
While the above is a disclosure of the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is apparent that various changes in the minor details of construction, and formation and arrangement of the various parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the claims.
What is claimed is 1. A non-skid tire comprising a body, a foundation strip extending around-the body and being provided with slots, a chain arranged on said foundation with certain of its links engaged in said slots, a finishing ply over the foundation strip and support ing the remainder of the chain links, a stem carried by said foundation strip andv projecting through one of the latter mentioned links, and a clamp on said stem for engagement with said link, substantially as described. A non-skid tire comprising a body, a foundation strip extending around the body, a chain arranged on said foundation strip, stems projecting from said foundationstrip through the intermediate links of said chain, a clamp removably secured on each stem and engaging said intermediate links, and knobs on said clamps projecting outwardly and terminating even with the outer extremities of the alternate links, substantially as clescribed.

foundation strip extending around said body and being provided with slots, metallic plates secured to: the outer face of said foundation strip between said slfots, threaded stems projecting outwardly from said plates, a finishing ply arranged over said foundation strip and being provided with slots alined with those of saidstrip, a chain disposed around said body' with its alternate links seated in and projecting from said slots, the intermediate links resting upon said finishing ply and inclosing said stems, a clamp on each stem. engaging the adjacent intermediate link, and a nut on each stem for binding said clamps in place, substantiall y described.

foundation strip extending around thebody, plates arranged in spaced relation upon said strip on the exterior face thereof, a stem for each plate, heads on said, stems, the said heads being secured-between said plates and said strip and the said stems projecting radially from said ti-re, a chain arranged around said tire, the said stems projecting through certain of the links of said chain, and knobs removably attached to the outer ends ofv said stems.
