Letters Patent No. 62,0V17,Zatecl February 12, l867.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOT HEELS.

'IO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN.
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. DAVIS, of. Milford Centre, in the county ofUnion, and State ofOhio, have invented a new and improved Metallic Heel for Boots and Shoes;v and I do hereby declare the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference beingrhad to the accompanying drawings, 'inwhiehw 'and shoes as herein set forth.
Figure 1 is a sectional view showing the manner of attaching the metallic heel. Figure 2 isa view of the b'ottom of the heel.
Figure 3 is a top view of the heel detached.
Similar letters of reference in the different figures -indicate corresponding parts.
The nature of my invention consists in hollow metallic heel for boots and shoes, east from iron, brass', or,
other suitable material, and in the manner of 4attaching it to bootsand shoes.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its con-` struction and manner of use.
The heel is east from brass, iron, er other suitable material, of a single piece with the cavity cored out, leaving the bosses or projections o for the purpose of attaching to the 'boot or shoe. Three of these-ribs or bosses-extend the whole depth of the heel, giving it strength and stiffness and allowing the main shield to be made thinner and lighter vthan it would otherwise have to be. 'Ihe other lugs serve as a guide and support for the clinch nails used in attaching the heels, as shown in fig. 1.- The heel is attached by means of malleable clinch nails passing through suitable holes drilled to receive them. These nails a have countersunk heads, as shown,'and being set in one of the corrugatons on the bottom,-as shown iniig. 2, and all nearly Hush with the bottom when finished. The eorrugations or grooves shown in the bottom of the heel keep it fromslipping upon iceaud snow, overcoming this objection to a plain metallic plate. The nails a a pass through the outer and inner soles and are itmly clinched, as shown, holding the heel firmly to the boot or shoe.
I do not claim broadly a metallic heel, such heels having been known and used, but what I claim, and
desire to secure by Letters Patent, is` V A east metallic heel constructed as described, in combination with the devices for uniting the same to boots' v GEORGE W. DAVIS.
