Description

Patented Feh. |4, |899. s. F. swANsoN.
CUSHION TIRE.
(Apliczion med sept. e, 189s.)
(N o M o d e I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SWAN F. SWANSON, OF PUEBLO, COLORADO.
CUSHION-TIRE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 619,447, dated February 14, 1899. i
Application iiled September 8, 1898. Serial No. 690,468. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SWAN F. SWANSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pueblo, in the county of Pueblo and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cushion-Tires; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to imprvements in cushion-tires for bicycles and other vehicles; and the object is to provide an efficient device of this character.
To this end the invention consists in the con# struction, combination, and arrangement of the device, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
l The accompanying drawings show my invention in the best form now known to me; but many changes in the details might be made within the skill of a good mechanic without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the claim at the end of this speciiication.
The same reference characters indicate the saine parts of the invention. Figure 1 is a side elevation with a portion broken away of a section of my improved pneumatic tire. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 8 is an enlarged detail view of the manner of securing the inner end of the spring to the metal plate.
1 denotes the tire, the longitudinal meeting edges 2 2 of which are provided with eyelets to receive the lacing-cord 3.
4 represents a stamped-up thimble formed at its open end with a curved flange 5 to conform to the groove in the inner face of the outer wall of the tire, and 6 denotes a helical spring, the outer end of which encompasses the thimble, while its inner end is fastened to the continuous spring-metal strip 7 by means of the clamps 8 8, which engage the notches 9 9 in the strips, and 10 denotes a bote tom plate or ange which is also secured bef tween the end of the spring and the strip 7 to form a bearing for the longitudinal joint in the tire. p
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In combination, the liexible tire, the thimble formed with a curved flange, the helical spring encompassing said thimble, the continuous notched strip, the bearing-plate and the clamps 8 8 arranged to secure the inner end of the spring, notched strip and bearings plate together, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit nesses.
SWAN F. SWANSON.
