l whereby the coarse material may be held in the machine while the 'line material is driven or conducted therefrom.
The further and particular object of the iuvention is to provide means by which the separation may be regulated so that all grades from the coarsest material that could pass `through the mill to the iinest impalpable powder may be obtained.
A further and particular' object is to provide means for taking care of the coarse material which is prevented from escaping at the outlet and for again discharging such coarse material into the mill.
My invention consists in the combination, with the pulverizer proper,of means for creating a strong current of liuid, such as air or water, through the same, an outlet from the pulverizer, and an incline therefrom whereon the heavier particles are stopped and returned to the pulverizer, While the lighter particles are carried olf by said current.
My invention further consists in means for accelerating the action of the air-currents at the point of separation.
My invention further consists in means for regulating the action of the air-currents whereby various grades of material may be taken from the pnlverizer.
My invention further consists in the combination, with the mill-pulverizer proper and the outlet thereof, of means whereby thematerial is worked toward the front or forward end of the pulverizer and an elevator or conveyer opening into the body of the pulverizer at a point near the outlet thereof to take the coarse material and return the same to the inlet of the pulverizer.
The invention further consists in constructions and combinations of parts, all as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a pulverizer and separator embodying my invention. Eig. 2 is a front elevation of the same enlarged. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal and vertical section of the pulverizing-machine on the line @cof Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a partial transverse vertical section on the line z e of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail section showing the means for moving the adjusting-rod which is within the main drive-shaft. Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail taken from Fig. 3. Fig. 7 is a horizontal section on the line u u of Eig. 2. Fig. 8 is a vertical section on the line y y of Fig. 7. Fig. 9 is a vertical and longitudinal section showing a modified form of pulverizer, the same being provided with a separator or grader embodying my invention.
In the drawings I have shown a complete machine, though I shall not claim in this application several new inventions shown therein, and such parts will not be particularly described. The base 2 is provided with bearings 3 and 4 for a main driving-shaft 5, which driving-shaft is provided with a longitudinal hole 6 to receive the adj listing-rod 7, which rod is moved longitudinally by means of the hand-screw 8. Any suitable antifriction means 9 may be interposed between the end of the screw S andthe thrust or adjusting rod 7. Upon the forward end of the base2 is the annular body 10 of the machine. The inner end 1l of the body has a central hole 12 around the shaft 5, through which hole the materia] is fed from the trunk 13. The inside of the body 10 is lined with a removable corrugated shell 14, the opening within which is smaller at the outer end than at the inner end, whereby the action of the rotating parts or beaters 15 is to move the material gradually into the forward end of the body or drum. The cap or head 17 of the body or drum l0 is secured in any suitable way, but preferably by means of studs and pins, as shown in Fig. 2, Whereby the head may be readily removable. the particles of -material as they are rotated rapidly around the axis of the cone are thrown by centrifugal force against the inner surface of the cone and the heavier particles are deiiected thereby backward into the dischargeopening of the pulverizer. The finer material is not so.much affected by centrifugal force and the current isstrong enough to carry the same out of the machine. In order to accelerate the rotation of the air as it is discharged from the annular opening 2l, and thereby increase the resistance to the outward ow of the air, and to increase the centrifugal force upon the particles carried by the air, l arrange the Wings or blades 24 upon the disk 20 to rotate therewith. These blades interrupt the outward flow of the air to an extent, so that the tendency is to stop the outward progress of material and give it a transverse direction. When the blades are so arranged as to nearly iill the cone, this action and that of centrifugal force becomes so great that only the finest powder will escape from the cone, while when the blades are retracted, leaving a wide space between them and the walls of the cone, the air-current is'suficient to carry out even the heavier particles. For the convenient adjustment of the blades or wings '24 I provide a crosshead 30 upon the forward end of the thrustrod 7. This cross-head is provided with pins 3l, which are'in inclined slots 32 in the blades 24. Therefore when the rod is thrust forward the blades will be drawn back, while when the rod is drawn back the blades will be forced outwardly. No particular device is provided for drawing the rod back, as the centrifugal force of the blade is sufficient to throw them outward and thrust the rod Aback with considerable force. This thrust force makes it necessary to employ an antifriction-stop of some kind between the hand-screw 8 and the rear end of the rod 7. In place of this arrangement, however, I may make the blades 24 to lap upon vone another, (see Fig. 10,) so that they are practically balanced upon opposite sides ofthe shaft 5 and the rod upon which they are adjustable. In this way the end 'thrust upon the rod 7 is minimized. The wings 24 are held in a transverse box 34 on the disk 20, and the sides of this box or guide are removable to permit the removal o'f the blades orl wings. The material discharged from the cone is preferably carried through the large elbow 35 into a capacious dust-co1- lector 36, wherein the material is separated fromthe air which carries it, the material being discharged through t-he valve 37 at the lower end of the dust-collector.
As the material is advanced toward the outvward end of the pulverizer and is rapidly rotated within the same by the beaters the material which is thrown back into the body of the machine by the cone is lifted and thrown upward into the cylinder or chamber or duct 25, leading to the trunk 13, and through the opening 26, arranged above the pulverizer. The pressure of the air would carry the material back; but as this would lessen the pressure I provide in the cylinder a rotating valve or carrier 27, .which lifts the material and throws it back into the trunk 13, from which it passes again into contact with the rotating beaters. The valve or elevator 27 rotates very slowly as compared with the beaters or heads l5 upon the disks and allows only a small quantity of air to pass.
This particular feed device which I have illustrated in connection with the machine need not be here described. It comprises a vibrating feed-plate and means for regulating the throw of the same.
A machine suitable for pulverizing ore and for use with water is shown in Fig. 9,the same comprising the body or drum, the trunk through which the ore and water enter the body, and the centrifugal crushing-rolls 37, which are carried from a yoke 38 on the main shaft. The cone 39 is here arranged at the inner side of the body of the mill and leads into an annular trunk 40, from which the material is discharged througha spout 4l. The end of the trunk is closed by a rotating disk, which carries transverse blades or wings 42, that may be adjustable.
It is believed that the operation of the machine will Vbe readily understood from the foregoing. f
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination, with means for creating a rotating and axially-moving current of air, and for confining said current of air, with an incline or de flector whereonsaid current impinges, anddistinct means for creating a transverse current of air to resist the onward flow of the'first-mentioned current, whereby the centrifugal force of the particles carried by the first-mentioned current of air is increased to insure the backward deflection of the heavier particles upon said incline or de flector, substantially as described.

The combination, with the body or cylinder, of a conical deiiector arranged at one end of said body or cylinder, and providing a free outlet therefrom, anA inlet-opening in the opposite end of said body or cylinder, mean'soutside `of said cone for creating a strong current of air through said body and outward through said cone, means within .IOO

said cone to limit and resist the volume and velocity of the air-current passing through said body and cone, and means for regrinding or conveying away the larger particles deiiected backward into said body, substantially as described.
8. The combination, with the body or cylinder, of the conicaldclectorarranged at one end of said body or cylinder, and providing a free outlet therefrom, an inlet-opening in the opposite end of said body or cylinder, means outside of said cone for creating a strong current of air through said body and outward through said cone, adjustable means Within said cone to limit and resist the volume and Velocity of the air-current passing through said body and cone, and means for conveying away the larger particles deliected backward into said body, substantially as described.

The combination, With the cylindrical body, of the rotary beaters arranged therein, the feed-trunk 13, said body provided with an opening l2 to receive material from said trunk, `and having a larger openingin its opposite end, the conical delector arranged about said larger opening, for the purpose described, said body being provided also With an opening 26, a duct leading therefrom to said feed-trunk 13, said opening 2G being at the top of said body to receive the coarse m aterial deflected by said conical deiiector, and the conVeyer-valve to operate in said duct, substantially as described.
5. The combination, of the body or cylinder, having the flaring interior wall or grinding-surface, with the beaters or breakers, and means for rotating the same within said body or cylinder, said body or cylinder having the inlet-opening in 'one end and the larger ontlet-opening in its opposite end, the conical de iector provided about said outlet-openin g, means permitting the escape of large particles of material from said cylinder at the circumference of said outlet-opening only, and means adjustable within said conical deiiector, adapted to limit and resist the discharge of airor other iuid from said conical deflector, substantially as described.

The combination, with a conical deflector, of means for creating a current of Iiuid longitudinally through said conical deiiector, to impinge upon the surface thereof, and for rotating the body of fluid within said deiiector to limit both the volume and the velocity of said current Within said conical deflector, and project the particles carried thereby against said deiiector and thence backwardly against the longitudinal current, substantially as described.
7. 'lhe combination, with a conical deflector, of the machine-body, the rotary part arranged therein to advance the material, pulverize the same and create a current of fluid through said conical deflector, and distinct adjustable means within said conical deflector for regulating and limiting the onward and the rotary movement of the said current within the conical deflector, substantially as described.
8. The combination, with the body or casing, having a tapered interior peripheral Wall, and having the central or axial inlet and outlet openings and also having a peripheral opening near said outlet-opening, of the cylinder or chamber into which said peripheral openin g leads, the rotating valve or elevator arranged in said cylinder or chamber and discharging through the side thereof to return the material to the inlet-opening of said body or casing, and a suitable breaking or crushing mechanism arranged within said body or casing, and adapted to create a forcible Huid current through said body or casing, substantially as described.
9. The combination, with the body or casing having inlet and outlet openings in its ends, of the rotary beaters or breakers arranged within said body or casing to pulverize the material and create an onward current of air or other fluid, the conical deflector arranged about said outlet-opening, and the rotary wings arranged within said conical deflector, as and for the purpose specified.

The combination, with the body or cas ing having inlet and outlet openings in its end, of the rotary beaters or breakers ar ranged within said body or casing for the pu r-. poses described,the conical delector arranged at said Outletbpening, the rotary wings arranged within said conical deflector to rotate with said beaters or breakers for the purpose specified, and means for adjusting said Wings toward and from the interior surface of said conical delector, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

The combination, with the body or casing having the central inlet and outlet openings in its opposite ends, of the conical deiiector arranged about said outlet-opening, the central shaft, the thrust-rod Within the same, the transversely-movable wings or blades carried by said shaft, to rotate within said conical deilector, and a connection between said thrust-rod and said wings or blades, whereby the latter may be adjusted, substantially as described.

The combination, with the body or casing, of the conical deflector, the rotary shaft, the thrust-rod, the transverse wings or blades carried by said shaft and within said conical deflector, said blades being connected with said thrust-rod to be adjusted thereby, and lapping upon one another to equalize the Weight upon the opposite sides of the shaft, whereby the centrifugal throw of the blades is minimized, substantially as described.

The combination, with a suitable feed device and a trunk or spout, of the body or casing to receive the material therefrom, the rotary beaters or breakers arranged'within said body or casing, the return-duct between the forward part of the said body and the said inlet thereto, a valve provided in said duct, the conical deliector arranged at the outlet of said body or casing, means for increasing the rotary action of the air-current therein, and a collector, for the lfine material, connected with said conical deiiector, 'substantially as described.
15. The combination, with the cylindrical body or casing, having the interior grindingsurface, ofthe rotary beaters or breakers and means lfor rotating the same within said body or casing, said casing having an inlet-opening in one end and a larger outlet-opening in the opposite end, the conical detlector provided at said outlet-opening, the disk 2O rotating with said beaters or breakers and preventing the escape o f material yfrom the body or cylinder except at the circumference of said outletopening, and transversely-arranged wings also rotating with said beaters and arranged within said conical deiiector to limit @ne resist .the While@ and ve.
