HOSE-WASHER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 619,220, dated. February '7, 1899.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD O. PORTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bristol, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose -Washers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in hose-washers for Washing firemens hose; and the objects of my improvement are simplicity and economy in construction and efficiency in use.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional front elevation of my hose-washer, and Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same.

In both figures a portion of the swinging frame is represented as broken out in order to economize space in the drawings.

A designates a water tank or trough of any ordinary construction and within which the hose is washed. Said tank will be supported on the floor at a convenient height and to some suitable overhead support immediately over the tank, preferably the ceiling, (represented by the line 3.)

I hang the swinging frame 4 on any suitable hinge or pivot-as, for example, the shaft 5and hinge-lugs 6. The frameeextends downward into the tank, with its lower end high enough to clear the bottom. On one or both sides of the frame Iplace ahandle 7, by means of which an operator or operators may swing the frame within the tank. If the handle is on one side only, the operator will stand on that side in using the machine, in which case the handle side would be considered as the front of the apparatus. This is the sense in which I have used the words front and side in my description of Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.

The lower end of the frame is provided with a fixed brush 8, having its brushing-face uppermost. Above the brush 8 in the frame is a sliding brush 9, with its brushing-face in opposition to that of the brush 8. Above the sliding brush 9 is a fixed cross-bar 10, and between the cross-bar and sliding brush the springs 11 are placed,with a tendency to force said brushes toward each other. I also provide the sliding brush with a suitable lifting device 12, by means of which the said brush may be raised against its springs to separate or open the brushes. As before implied, the tank is to be supplied with Water, and I prefer to so arrange the tank and supply that running water may be used.

For washing hose the sliding brush is lifted to let the coupling and end of the hose pass between the brushes, and then the said sliding brush is released to let the opposing brushes bear upon the opposite sides of the flattened hose with all the force of the spring or springs. The hose is then drawn along through the tank, and at the same time the brush-frame is moved back and forth longitudinally of the hose to thoroughly brush both sides as the hose passes along through the tank. Whenever a coupling reaches the brushes, the sliding brush is lifted to let the coupling pass. By having the tank at the lower part of the room and the hinge of the swinging frame a sufficient distance above the tank, as on the ceiling, the are on which the brush oscillates will be so great as to give no inconvenience due to the rising and falling of the hose while being scrubbed or brushed.

It is apparent that some changes from the specific construction herein disclosed may be made, and therefore I do not wish to be under stood as limiting myself to the precise form of construction shown and described, but desire the liberty to make such changes in work ing my invention as may fairly come within the spirit and scope of the same.

I claim as my invention- 1. A hose-washer,consisting of the combination of a water-tank, with the movable brushframe extending down into said tank, a fixed brush mounted on said frame, the sliding spring-pressed brush also mounted on said frame in opposition to the said fixed brush, a lifting device to move said sliding brush against its spring-pressure, and a support for said brush-frame on which the said frame may be moved back and forth longitudinally of the hose within the said tank, substantially as described.
