(Application Bled Apr. 18, 189B.)
(No Model.)
LTHO.. WASHINGTON, D. C
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN V. KIRKLAND AND ROBERT SAMUEL KIRKLAND, OF SOUTH FULTON, TENNESSEE.
FOOT-WARM ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 619,045, dated February 7, 1899.
Application filed April 18, 1898.
To @ZZ whom t may con/cern,.-
Be it known that we, JOHN V. KIRKLAND and ROBERT SAMUEL KIEKLAND, citizens of the United States, residing at South Fulton, in the county of Obion and State of Tennes. see, have invented a new and useful Foot- Warmer, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a heater lwhich can be utilized as a footwarmer, lantern, and means for keeping food at any desired temperature, whereby it is made more wholesome and palatable.
The primary object of the invention is a portable heater to be used in sleighs, buggies, and other vehicles and in apartments or other places for keeping the feet vwarm in extremely cold weather, the device involving a substantial structure and being strong and durable, so as to be serviceable and effective for the purposes designed.
For a full understanding of the merits and advantages of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings and the following description.
The improvement is susceptible of various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction without departingfrom the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and to a full disclosure of the invention an adaptation thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a heater constructed in accordance with and embodying the essential features of thisinvention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan section of the complete heater about on the line X X of Fig. 2.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The body of the stove may be of any size and form, dependent upon the character and design of the heater, and, as shown, is oblong in plan section, with its ends rounded. A lamp 1 is located at one end of the body 2 and is the means for generating the heat, which is utilized for warming the feet and anything placed within the body 2. An opening is fits within the upper portion thereof.
Serial No. 678,056. (No model.)
formed in the end of the body adjacent to the lamp and is protected by a glass 3 or other transparent substance, so as to admit of the rays being projected to admit of objects being discerned and the way lighted. Openings 4 are provided in the end of the body close to its bottom and beneath the glass 3 for the purpose of admitting air to the lamp for supporting combustion.
The lamp may be secured. within the body in any desired manner, and, as shown, it is passed through an opening 5 in the bottom of the body 2 and is held in place by springcatches 6, as commonly practiced in the art of constructing lanterns and similar illuminating devices. The wick is adjusted by a shaft 7, which passes through an opening in the body and is provided at its outer end with a button in the ordinary manner.
The upper end of the body is closed by a cover 8, which has a depending flange or rim to t within the body, and, this cover is manipulated by means of a handle 9, applied centrally thereto. The cover issecured from accidental displacement by means of hooks or like fasteningslO, applied to the cover and adapted to engage with eyes 11, provided at the sides of the body. to the under side of the cover and conforms approximately to the outline of the body 2 and A pipe 13 is placed within the drum 12, and a vertical branch 14 is pendent from one end thereof and is in line with the lamp l and receives the burner thereof,so as to carry off the products of combustion. A second branch pipe 15 communicates with the opposite end of the horizontal pipe 13 and projects through an opening in the coverS and has the lower end of a ventpipe 16 fitted thereto, the discharge end of the pipe 16 being protected by a hood or cap 17. The pendent branch 14: extends through an opening in the bottom portion of the drum 12 and is provided in its front side with an A drum 12 is secured opening which is covered by means of a glass 9 5 18 or other transparent material. The glasscovered opening 18 is in register with the opening 3 of the body 2, so as to admit of the light shining through the openings so as to be utilized in the manner set forth, thereby en- IOO abling the heater to be used in the capacity of a lantern, which is of great advantage. The drum 12 provides an extended surface for radiating heat and prevents the cover 8 from getting too hot and `burning articles of clothing coming in contact therewith.
The interior of the body can be used for Warming food or other articles desired to be kept Warm, and the food may be placed in a box 19 or other receptacle and the same located within the body, as indicated. Obviously as many boxes or receptacles 19 may be used as desired, thereby keeping different articles of food separate, whereby the fiavor of one may not be imparted to the other when confined in the heating-space of the body.
lVhen the lamp is lighted and the cover is in position, the hot air and products of combustion pass from the burner through the pendent branch 14, horizontal pipe 13, and vetical pipe 15, heating the drum 12 and the space Within the body 2. By controlling the flame the heat can be regulated as desired.
When used as a foot-warmer, the feet are placed upon the cover 8, and, if desired, a robe or other covering may placed over the feet and around the heater without danger of being scorched or burned, thereby confining the heat and utilizing it to the best possible advantage.
Any food or article to be heated or kept warm may be placed directly in the heatingspace of the body or inclosed in a box or receptacle 19, which latter is placed Within the body.
Should it be required to have a light, the device can be used in the capacity of a lantern, inasmuch as the rays of light from the lamp are projected through the registering openings 18 and 3, as will be readily comprehended.
by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a portable heater or lamp-stove, the
combination of a body having its upper portion unobstructed throughout its length and breadth and open at the top, a heater at one end of the body, a removable cover closing the upper open end of the body, a drum secured to the under side of and carried by the cover and filling the upper portion of the body, a horizontal pipe located Within the opening covered by transparent material, a
lamp located Within the body at the end adjacent to said protected opening, a removable cover for closing the top of the body and provided With means for securing it thereto, a drum secured to the under side of and carried by the cover and coextensive with and filling the upper portion of the body, a horizonal pipe closed at its ends and arranged Within the drum, a vertical pipe pendent from one end of the horizontal pipe and projecting below the drum to make detachable connection with the lamp and having an opening in its front side in register with the opening in the end of the body, and a vertical outlet-pipe in communication with the opposite end of the horizontal pipe and projecting above the drum and cover, substantially as specified.
In testimony that We claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto aliixed our signatures in thepresen'ce of two Witnesses.
