TWYER-IRON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 619,010, dated February 7, 1899. Application led February 24,1898. Serial No. 671,518. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK S. BLAKESLEY, a citizen of the United States,residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inTwyer-Irons, of which the following is a specification. T
The object of this invention is to produce a twyer-iron in which the volume of the air- Io blast from the bellows or blower to the fire may be varied at pleasure and which when set will not readily be disarranged by jars or' blows.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a vertical central section through the twyeriron on the central line of the air-blast pipe. Fig. 2 is also a Vertical central section through the twyer-iron, but on the central line of the tube which incases the rod for the air-valve. Fig. 8 is a plan View looking into the lire-pot of the twyer-iron.

A is the lire-pot of the twyer-iron. z 5 A is the air-chamberbeneath the fire-pot.
B is the air-blast pipe for conducting the blast from the bellows or blower to the airchamber A'.
C is the pipe or tube for'inc'asing the rod for the air-valve. p f
C' is a pivoted shutter for closing the end of the pipe C.
D is the rod for the air-valve. The outer end of this rod is provided with the ring or eye D', and the inner end D2 thereof is made square in cross-section.
E is a ring for thel bottom of the lire-pot, having the depending lugs E to provide bearings for the inner end of the valve-rod D.'
F is the Valve-closure having a squarecentral opening for the reception of the square end D2 of the valve-rod D. The form of the closure is similar to that of a ball with por? tions cut away, leaving facet-like surfaces, which in the closure are yto provide for the passage of the air-blast. of the valve-rod does not pass through the closure exactly on the axial center of the ball, but a little to one side thereof, in order that the closure shall balance in any position and The square end D2- not be possessed of the tendency to turn when shaken or jarred.
The lower angle of the air-chamber A', opposite the air-blast pipe B, is filled in, providing a deflecting-surface for turning the air-blast upward.
In operation my twyer-iron is set into a forge in the usual manner, the pipe C extending outward at the side of the forge. The pipe B is connected with the air-blast and the 6o lire started. The Volume of the air-blast is altered by turning the valve-closure F so that any one of its three different facets permits the passage of the air-blastinto the fire. The position of the parts shown in Fig. 1 indi- 65 cates the air-valve as closed. In Figs. 2 and 3 itis represented as being open. The closure F is heavy enough so as not to be turned by the force of the air-blast and therefore may be set in any desired position and the blast 7o regulated accordingly.
When it is desirable `to clear the air-chamber A' of the ash and cinders which must necessarily fall into it, the ring E is removed, the valve-rod D Withdrawn through the outer end of the pipe C, and the closure F taken from the air-chamber A', when the latter may be cleared of all cinders. The parts are easily `replaced preparatoryto building a fire in the fire-pot. 8o
I claim asI my invention-, l. In a twyer-iron, in combination, a repot, an air-chamber, an air-blast pipe opening into the air-chamber, a ring adapted to be set into the lower part of the fire-pot which ring has two depending perforated lugs, a rotatable closure for varying the volume of the air-'blast to the fire-pot, having facets of differentsizes also having a pivotal opening eccentric to its center and a r'od extending 9o through such opening and through the perforations of the lugs, for rotating the closure, substantially as and'for the purpose specified.

In a tWyer-iron, in combination, a firepot, an air-chamber, having an inclined airdeilecting wall, an air-blast pipe opening into the air-chamber, a ring adapted to be setinto the lower part ofthe fire-pot which ring has two depending perforated lugs, a rotatable closure for varying the volume of the air-blast loo to the fire-pot, having facets of dierent sizes also having a pivotal opening eccentric to its center, a rod extending through such opening and through the perforations of the lugs for rotating the closure, and a pipe for incasing the rod, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
