NI'TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABNER PERCY LOCKETT, OF KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE.
LAMP-CHIMNEY HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N 0. 618,513, dated January 31, 1899.
Application filed July 9,1898. Serial No. 685,508. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABNER PERCY LooKE'rT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Knoxville, in the county of Knox and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Im pro vements'in Lamp-Chimney Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to chimney-holders, and has for its object to provide means whereby a lamp-chimney may be securely held on the burner beyond the possibility of accidental displacement and yet be capable of being readily removed therefrom.
To this end myinvention consists of a lampburner having an upwardly-turned and inwardly-projecting segmental flange on the base of the burner engaging a suitablyforlned lug or shoulder on the chimney.
The invention further consists in an upwardly-turned inwardly-projecting segmental flange on the base of the burner engaging a suitable lug or shoulder on the chimney, combined with means retaining the chimney in place when the lug or shoulder is engaged by the flange.
. The invention further consists in a lampchimney having segmental lugs projecting outwardly from the base thereof.
Preferably the means for retaining the lugs of the chimney in position under the flange of the burner consist of a rigid projection preventing the chimney from turning in one direction and a spring catch securing it against turning in the opposite direction; but I may, if found desirable, form the firstmentioned projection also in the shape of a spring-catch.
I have illustrated one form which my invention may assume in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lampburner with my improved holder. Fig. 2 is a plan of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section of Fig. 2, showing a chimney in place on the burner. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on theline 4 4, Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the base of a chimney, showing the lugs thereon.
Like letters designate like parts in all the views.
A is a burner of any preferred construction, and B is a segmental flange projecting upward from the outer periphery of the base and provided with an inwardly-turned lip b. Preferably the flange B is made integral with the base of the burner; but it may be formed separately and soldered or otherwise secured to the base. There may be one or more flanges B secured on the burner. In the present instance I have shown two oppositelydisposed flanges each extending for a distance a little less than one'quarter of the circumference of the burner-base.
O is a chimney of any desired form, having a suitable lug or lugs o, the number of lugs on the chimney preferably corresponding with the number of flanges on the burnerbase. By placing the chimney on the burner so that the lugs c occupy the spaces between the flanges B and then turning the chimney the lugs thereon will pass under and be engaged by the lips Z) on the flanges. For the purpose of preventing the chimney from being turned too far the flange is provided with a stop 1), Figs. 1 and 4, and a spring-catch 1)", Figs. 1 and 2, is arranged to engage the shoulder on the lug in opposition to the stop b and prevent backward rotation of the chimney. This spring-catch may be formed on the flange'B, as shown at b in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, or it may, if preferred, be formed on the base and project upward through a slot or opening, as shown at N, Fig. 4. It is evident that the shoulder or stop I) may be rigid, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, or may be in the form of a springcatch without departing from the principle of my invention. Furthermore, it will be understood that the springcatch 1)" and the stop-shoulder Z) may be formed on the same upwardly projecting flange or otherwise, the essential feature being that a stop-shoulder shall be provided to prevent the turning of the chimney in one direction and a suitable catch to engage and hold it from movement in the other direction, the stop and catch acting in opposition to each other.
My invention is equally applicable to lamp= burners, gas-fixtures, and supports for electric-light globes and the like, and it is to be understood that where the expression lamp= burner is used herein it is to be regarded as the equivalent of the supports employed in similar relations on gas and electric-light fixtures.
Having thus described my invention, I
'claim 1. The combination with a lamp-chimney having an outwardly-projectinglug thereon, of alarm p-burner having an inwardly-projecting segmental flange on the periphery thereof, a stop or shoulder on the burner in the path of the lug on the chimney and determining its position on the burner, and a spring-catch acting in opposition to the stop and preventing backward rotation of the chimney, substantially as described.
2. A burner having an upwardly-projecting inturned flange secured to its base, a stopshoulder thereon, and a retaining-catch oppositely disposed to said stop-shoulder, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 26. day of July, 1898.
ABNER PERCY LOCKE'lll. [It s] Vitnesses:
JAS. H. WELCKER, JOHN D. CALDWELL.
