Description

EDWARD FARNUM, -0F BLACKSTONE, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Pat/m lVo. 61,822, l Febr-zung] 5, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT 1N lBUTIlclR-WOltKEB,.
ilgt Sunnah nfrru tu in tlgisc litters "ntoit :uit mixing plutot the 5mm.
TO ALLTO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME:
Bc it known that l', EDWARD FARNL'M, of lackstone, in the count-y of Worcester, and State of Massachu ,sc-tts, have invented a new and improved Butter-Worker, and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof` reference being had` to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specifici tion, and in whichv i Figiuje l is a side elevation.
Figure 2, a vertical and central section; and
Figure 3, a top view or plan.
rlhe object of my present invention is to provide a ready and expeditious means, not only of expelling the butter-milk from a mass of butter, but of thoro-ughly mixing or incorporating salt therewith.'
The inventionconsists in a vertical box or case open at the top and having a foraminous bottom, together with a receiving drawer or receptacle, and having applied to it and operating within it a plunger in manner and for the purpose as hereinafter described.
'In the drawings above mentioned as illustrating my invention, A denotes a rectangular case open at top and having a foraminous partition, a, extending across it, a drawer or sliding-box, b, being fitted to the interior ci the case A and immediately under the partition a, or in such manner that the rear sideof the drawer, in the act removing it, shall scrape the under surface of the partition and remove any butter which would otherwisc adhere thereto. This drawer l) has a foraminous bottom and is raised a suliicient distance above the bottom ot' the case A to allow a pan or vessel, e, for receiving butter-milk to be placed under it. A cross-bar, B, uniting two standards, d c?, extending upward from or forming part et the sides of the ease A, supports in a mortise, e, a rod or slideigf, fixed to the upper surface of a plunger, C, such plunger being of a proper size and shape te iittne interior ol" the case A. The slider B is fnreated or formed with along slot, g, for receiving along lever, D, whose f ulcrum is a pin, z., passing through the rod f, as shown in figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, the base of the fulcrum being a link, z', encompassing its end and jointed to'the end of the case A.
In operating with the above-described apparatus, a' suitable quantity of butter to be worked is placed within Athe case A and resting upon its foraminous partition a. The plunger C'is then to be insert-ed in place within the mouth of the'ease, and rest-ing uponl the butter, and the lever D to be applied to it. Powerful pressure may now be applied to the xbutter, the eiect of which will be to force it through the foraminous partition a, from which it-will issue in. numerous long cylinders or sli'vers and be deposited iu the drawer I1, the butter-milk by the same pressure being forced from the mass' andthrough the holes of the partition around the circumference of the'slivers of butter into the drawer, from whence it flows through its i'oraminous bottom into the pan n. The butter is thus left in a loose and porous state, highly. favorable for receiving the salt which may be spread upon it as it is stirred about, and which by this means Wiil become thoroughly incorporated with it.`
I would remark that a numbei` of' holes may be made in the slider f in order to raise the fulcrum of the lever D as the plunger is lowered within the case A while compressing the butter. I would alsoremarl: that the base of the lever may be independent of the machine, being attached to the side oi' a room, for instance, and the machine placed alongside of it.
I claim the improved butter-working machine above described, consisting ofthe case A, with its foraminous partition fr and drawer b, the plunger C and lever D, or its equivalent, as and for the purposes set forth.
EDW. FARNUM.
