EMMA AMELIA FORD, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF-ONE- HALF TO AMELIA I NEWMAN,
OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINED CORSET AND ABDOMINAL SUPPORTER:
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 617,731, dated January 17, 1899.
.pplioation filed May 12, 1898. Serial No. 680,430. (No model.)
To all It'll/0TH it may concern:
llc it known that I, EMMA AMELIA FORD, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Corset and Abdominal Supporter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a fulhclear, and exact description thereof. I
.fl'his i nvcntion relates to a certain new and useful combined corset and abdominal sup g'ioi-icr, which consists in the arrangement of c and details of construction, as will be hercinaf terf ull y set forth in the drawings and described and pointed out in the specification.
The main feature of the invention is to so arrang the abdominal supporter or obesitybelt in connection with the corset that when the corset i1. released from the body the supporter orbilt is removed at the same time and in so securing the supporter or belt that the same maybe tightened without aifecting or disturbing the lacing of the corset. By so providing that the supporter or belt is rel ased as the corset is unclasped I am enabled,
sity of wearer Qatfi' the belt-has been properly adjusted, to provide a support or obesity-belt which may be put on and taken. off without the necesthereof being required each time to unlacc and relace the fastening cords or devices, as is the case where the belt consists of a single piece which entirely surrounds the body and is only fastened together at one place. This enables a person to re move the support with little or no trouble and with the full knowledge that when re piaeed the supporter or belt will not have to be again adjusted to the person.
in order to fully comprehend the invention, re erence must be had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a plan view of the corset and supporter or belt, the corset being partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a figure with the combined corset and supporter or belt applied thereto, said view being from the rear; and Fig. 3 is a similar view, looking from the front.
The letter A is used to indicate any suitable corset with which supporter or belt is employed, which supporter or beltis made in halves or two parts, and each half or part consists of three sections 1 2 3. Section 1 is what I term the abdominal section, section 2 the back or fasteningseotion,and3 the connecting-section, which forms a union between sections 1 and 2. This section is composed, preferably, of two crossed pieces or straps of webbing, which are attached to the upper and lower portion of the back section and are united at the inner end of the ab dominal section. By thus crossing thecon necting straps or pieces an even strain is brought to bear upon the section 1 as the wearer of the supporter orbelt bends the body into different positions. One abdominal section is securely fastened at its outer edge to the under face of the hook stay portion 4 of the corset and the other abdominal section to the eyelet stay portion 5 of the corset, Fig.-
1. The connecting pieces or straps 3- pass' through an opening 6 in each side of the corset, so that while the back or fastening sections 2 rest upon the outer face of the corset the abdominal sections will come below or inside of the corset and bear directly against the abdomen of the wearer without interfering with the corset proper.
The back sections in the present case are each provided with a line of eyelets 7, through which is inserted the fastening or lace cord 8. After the corset has been fitted to the wearer the lacing-cord S is drawn so as to secure proper adjustment of the supporter or belt and then secured. Inasmuch as the supporter or belt is not united at its front it is obvious that with removal of the corset the belt or supporter is released from the wearer without the necessity of unlacing the same at the back. It will thus be observed that after being once adjusted to the person of the wearer it may be taken off and put on with the corset without necessity of readjustment. 5
In the present instance the abdomen-sections are shown as extending only to the lower end of the corset, and the extreme ends of the corset are shown held against being pulled apart by the fastening-strap 9, which is se- :00 cured to one side or edge of the corset, and fit over a stud IOZa-ttachcd to the opposite edge of the corset, Fig. 3. However, if so'desired, the width of sections 1 may be increased and extended below the corset and the projeoting portion of the sections be united in the same manner as the lower ends of the'corset. The width of the belt or supporter will be dependent upon the person for whomthe same is made. ,It wi1l thus be observed that while acting as a supporter the same may be utilized as an obesity-belt, thu's serving to support and reduce the figure.
As the belt is secured to the front stay portion of the corset by stitching or otherwise, it will, when drawn together at the back, hold the corset firmly in place and prevent the front stays or steels breaking, as so often occurs when the wearer thereof bends or 'stoops over.
While I prefer to unite the back sections of the belt by suitable lacing,it is obvious that buckles or straps may. be utilized for this purpose.
Inasmuch as the abdominal sections of the supporter or belt are located under the corset there will be no interferencewith the fit of the Waist when applied thereover, as the surface is unbroken.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be protected by Letters Patent, is'-- 1. In a corset the combination with the abdominal supporter, of the abdominal sections thereof attached to the bush edges of the corset; the back sections, adjustable connection between said back sections, and of a flexible connection between the abdominal sections and the back sections of the supporter.
2. In a corset the combination with the abdominal supporter,'of the abdominal sections thereof attached to the bush edgesof the corset, the back sections which bear upon the corset at its back, adjustable connection between the back sections, and r. a flexible conneetion between the abdominal and back sec-.
7 tions, said connection extending through side openings in the corset and being attached to the inner edge of each section.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 5thday of May, 1898. I
EMMA AMELIA FORD. Witnesses:
