UNITED STATES PATENT OEEVICE.v
VILBER D. FORSYTH AND ENOS T. BELL, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNORS TO THE UNION BOILER TUBE CLEANER COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
BOILER-TUBE CLEANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 617,439, dated January 10, 1899. Application iiled Januaryll, 1898. Serial No. 666,695. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-V
Beit known that we, WILBER D. FORSYTH and ENOS T. BELL, citizens of the United States, and residents of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boiler-Tube Cleaners; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a side elevation of a boiler-tube cleaner embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of theA same. Fig. 3 is a section on the line :c x, Fig.v 1. Fig. 4 is an end View of the shell B with the motor-wheel removed. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal central section. Fig. 6 is a side View showing a diierent form of cleaner-head.
This invention has relation to that class of boiler-tube cleaners which are combined lwith and driven by a water-motor carried through the tube being cleaned therewith; and it is designed to provide a cleaner-head of novel and efficient character and one which isso related to the motor as not to break the rotary force of the water after the latter leaves the motor and before it passes by the cleaner-head. In prior devices of this kind with which we are familiar there are obstructions of various kinds between the motor and the cleaner devices, which act to check the rotary motion of the water discharged from the motor, the consequence being that this dead-water is picked up by the cleaner-head in passing the same and is rotated, with the effect of checking the power and speed of the device. This we particularly wish to avoid and overcome.
With these objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates ahollow shaft or shaftsection. B is a cylindrical shell which is iirmly screwed or otherwise secured upon an end of the said shaft by means of a tubular l extension B. This shell contains therein a closed water-chamber O and an open motorchamber C', the forward wall of the former constituting the inner or bottom wall of the latter, said wall having therein a number of small oblique water-passages c. D designates a spindle which is fixed centrally in the wall C and which projects some distance beyond the forward end of the shell. F designates the motor-Wheel, which is fitted to turn snugly but freely in the chamber C'. This wheel is formed with a central hub portion f, surrounded upon its rear side by an annular chamber f', and with an annular 'peripheral portion having therethrough a se ries of water-passages G. These water-passages are separated by the integral portions G', which constitute the wings or blades of the wheel. The particular construction of the said wheel and of the Walls g g g of said passages forms no part of the present invention, but constitutes the subject-matter of a divisional application to be iiled by us.
H is the cleaner-headwhich is rigidly contor-wheel and the cleaner-head and forms a simple and secure' 'means of connection, while at the same time it permits the parts to be readily separated for repairs, dac. This head in the form shown consists of a wheel having an annular rim portion, which is con nected with the hub portion by spider-arms. Projecting from the forward face of the rim portion are a number of studs J, (in the present instance five,) to which are pivoted cutter-carrying arms K, capable of a limited movement in planes parallel with the said wheel. These arms are slotted at their free end portions, and journaled in these slots are toothed or serrated cutter-wheels L. These arms and cutter-wheels are similar in general character and operation to the corresponding devices described and claimed in '26, 1896, to which reference may be had.
If desired, we may employ two or more of these cutter-carrying wheels, arranged one in IOC advance ofthe other, as shown. In such event such wheels are preferably of gradually-in creasing diameter from the front to the rear one.
M designates guide-bars which are disposed around t-he hollow shaft A, their forward ends being secured in lugs on the shell B and their rear ends to lugs of a collar or ring N on said shaft.
It will be observed that the forward face of the motor-wheel is suficently near the open end of the chamber C so that the water discharged therefrom is discharged clear of the case or shell and is caused to strike directly and with force the walls of the tube being cleaned, and thereby assists the operation to a very considerable extent by removing the loosened or disintegrated scale and carrying it away. It will further be seen that there is no obstruction of any kind between the motor-wheel and the cleaner-head and its wheels to check the rotary motion of the water discharged from said wheel. Consequently the water passes the head and its cutter-Wheels under this rotary motion, and we thereby avoid the presence of dead-water around said wheels.
Having thus described our inventiomwhat we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a boiler-tube cleaner of the character described, the combination with the shell or case having the motor-chamber therein, the fixed spindle extending centrally through the said chamber and beyond the forward end of the case or shell, and a motor-wheel journaled on said spindle and having an. extended threaded boss, of a cutter-head comprising an extended hub portion, a solid rim portion, and an intermediate skeleton or open portion cutting devices loosely connected to said rim portion, and a sleeve journaled on said spindle and screwed respectively to the extended boss of the motor-Wheel and the extended hub portion of the cleaner-head, the space between the wheel and head beingotherwise unobstructed, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
