IMPROVEMENT m GULTIVATORS.

Be it known that I, A. H. ALLISON, of Qliarlottcsvillc, in the county of Hancock, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement iri Corn and Cotton Cultivators; and I do hereby declaretha-t the. following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawing, forming apart of this specification, in.whichncctions. I

Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of the-carriage, showings. side view of the ploughs and their con cotton, or other plants set in rows in the field; and consists in the arrangement of the ploughsfln connection with the frame, by which they work two sides of one row of corn or cotton at a time, and are completely under the control of the driver, who is seated on the carriage frame, the parts being all simple, strong, and compact The truck-frame A is built of strong square timbers, in rectangular form. It is mounted on two driving-wheels, B B, in the usual way; C is a drivers seat, in the rear. E is thcd'raught-pole. D D are plough-beams, on each end of which are placed two standards, a a, one forward of the other, to which are attached the ploughs b b. The fore ends of the plough-beams are suspended by clevises or books, 0 c, to the under side of a crossbar, 01, so that they can swing sidcwise, and the rear ends of the beams are hung by hooks or staples, e c,-upon suspended ways oi lncial guidcrods, ff, which are curved outward in conformity with the lateral sweep of the rear ends of the plough beams, so that the hooks e e can slide on them from one side to the othcr,. for the purpose of allowing the driver 7 to move the ploughs nearer to or further from the corn, as required, which is accomplished by the driver by means of stirrups or levers, g g, fastened on the hind ends of the plough-beams'D D; The guide-rods f f are suspended to cross-heads F F, through which the; ends pass vertically, and-are made adjustable to suit the depth of the ploughs by set-screws h it. The cross-heads F F slide up and down in slots made in uprighls, G G G, and they are lowered by means of levers H'H, which are fastenedto them centrally, the fulcrn of which levers are at 'z' 2', upon a crdss-beam, I, of the truck A, while their'free ends extend hack on both sides of the drivers seat Q, convenient for him to handle. The levers are held down, when the cross-heads F F are depressed, by catch-hooks 7: is placed on a rear cross-beam, K, and when the levers are released, the cross heads F F are raised by means of fiat curved springs m m, which'are, attached at one end to the cross-beam I, and at the other free ends bear up against the bottom of the cross-heads F F. On the inside of each of. the inside ploughs b b, I place clodpgua-rds, a; n, which are little wheels suspended byrods p pto the plough-beams, and made with spokes or open lattice-work of any kind, to allow the finer soil to sift through as they travel along side of the ploughs when at work, while the larger clods are tnrnediaside and prevented from being thrown upon the young plants. i i

I am aware that a wheeled cultivator, made to straddle the rows and having a drivers seat, is not now. My claims do not, therefore, have reference thereto. 1 I

Having thus described my invention, what} claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

I. I claim the plough-beamsl) D, suspended tothe curved guide-rods ff, and connected with. the stirrups or levers g g, for obtaining lateral movement, in combination therewith, and with the vertically sliding cross-heads F F, the levers H H, and the springs m m, constructed, arranged, and operatingsubstantially as and for the purposes herein described.
