IMPROVEMENT m GULTIVATORS.
TO ALL WHOM lT MAY cononnn:
Be it known that I, A. H. ALLISON, of Qliarlottcsvillc, in the county of Hancock, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement iri Corn and Cotton Cultivators; and I do hereby declaretha-t the. following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawing, forming apart of this specification, in.whichncctions. The cross-heads F F slide up and down in slots made in uprighls, G G G, and they are lowered by means of levers H'H, which are fastenedto them centrally, the fulcrn of which levers are at 'z' 2', upon a crdss-beam, I, of the truck A, while their'free ends extend hack on both sides of the drivers seat Q, convenient for him to handle. The levers are held down, when the cross-heads F F are depressed, by catch-hooks 7: is placed on a rear cross-beam, K, and when the levers are released, the cross heads F F are raised by means of fiat curved springs m m, which'are, attached at one end to the cross-beam I, and at the other free ends bear up against the bottom of the cross-heads F F. On the inside of each of. the inside ploughs b b, I place clodpgua-rds, a; n, which are little wheels suspended byrods p pto the plough-beams, and made with spokes or open lattice-work of any kind, to allow the finer soil to sift through as they travel along side of the ploughs when at work, while the larger clods are tnrnediaside and prevented from being thrown upon the young plants. i i
I am aware that a wheeled cultivator, made to straddle the rows and having a drivers seat, is not now. My claims do not, therefore, have reference thereto. 1 I
Having thus described my invention, what} claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
I. I claim the plough-beamsl) D, suspended tothe curved guide-rods ff, and connected with. the stirrups or levers g g, for obtaining lateral movement, in combination therewith, and with the vertically sliding cross-heads F F, the levers H H, and the springs m m, constructed, arranged, and operatingsubstantially as and for the purposes herein described.
