PISTOL SWORD.

(No Model.)

UNITED STATES PATENT @rmcn.
BERNARDO REYES, OF MONTEREY, MEXICO.
PISTO L-SWO RD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 616,356, dated December 20, 1898.
I Application filed May 27, 1898. Serial No.63L905. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, BERNARDO REYES, a citizen of the Republic of Mexico, residing at Monterey,in the State of Nuevo Leon,Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pistol-Swords; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in pistol-swords, and has for its objects to provide an effective and convenient weapon, consisting of a combined sword, revolver, and sword-hilt, in which the guard of the hilt shall be readily and conveniently attachable to and detachable from the revolver, and shall serve as a guard for the revolver-cylinder and for the trigger.
To these ends my-invention consists of the parts and combination of parts fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view in elevation; Fig. 2 a detail of means for securingfront end of hilt-guard to revolver, and Fig. 3 a detail of means for securing rear end of hilt-guard to revolver.
Like letters of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a sword-blade, which may be straight, swordlike, or slightly curved, like a saber, or of any desired form and dimensions, as long as it is capable of being secured to the revolver in such a way as not to interfere with the discharge of the load.
B is a pistol'or revolver of any desired construction, but provided with a projection b of the barrel, to which the sword-blade is secured by bolts.screws,or other suitable means. The hilt of the sword forms the grip of the pistol, and consists of the part 0, so made as to be readily grasped for using the weapon either as a firearm or as a sword. In the lower part of the hilt or central part of the pistol is the usual actuating and discharging mechanism of a revolver, comprising acylinder with its chambers,a trigger, and controlling-spring. It is an essential feature of the construction of the hilt that it shall contain this mechanism of the revolver.
The butt 0 of the pisto1,constitutin g the upper end of the sword-hilt, is preferably made separate and secured to the main part and is provided with a threaded socket 0. Into this socket is adapted to be screwed, so as to be removably held therein, the threaded end at of a guard or bow D. This bow may be of any desired form, and it extends beyond and inoloses both the trigger and the cylinder of the revolver, thus serving as a guard or shield for these parts to protect them from injury by blows or other causes. The lower or front end of the guard is provided with an aperture through which passes a screw-bolt E, engaging a lug F, depending from the pistol. By this construction the guard D may be readily detached from the hilt should it be found convenient or necessary to dispense with it or re place it.
From the above description of my construction it will be seen that I have provided a new and improved pistol-sword in which the combination of the blade, hilt, and revolver in the manner and by the means described produces a conveniently-handled and efficient weapon having a removable guard, serving the double purpose of shielding the hilt and protecting the trigger and the revolver-cylinder.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In combination with a pistol and its operating mechanism, a sword-blade secured to the barrel of said pistol, a hilt for said swordblade forming the pistol-grip, said operating mechanism within said hilt and a removable guard attached to said hilt, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a pistol and its operating mechanism, a sword-blade secured to said pistol, a hilt for said sword-blade forming the grip of the pistol, said operating mechanism within said hilt, a guard removably attached at its upper end to the upper end of said hilt and extending beyond and inclosing said operating mechanism, and a bolt removably securing the lower end of said guard to said hilt, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
B. REYES.
