` Application nea my 27,1898. sein No. 687,034.. un model.)
To all whom) it imagino/worn.- g
'Beit known'that I, FRANK D. KEEFE, a citizen'o'f the United States,residin g at Phila- `delphiajn the countyof J eierson-and State -ofNew York,1have`invented certain new and useful Improvements inlfFolding Chairs; and I do declarethe `following to be a full, clear, and exact description of I the invention, such as will 'enable others skilled in the t to which' to it appertains to makeand `use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawi ings, audio the lettersof reference marked thereon, which form apart of" this specication.
This invention relatesto certain new and useful improvements in folding chairs;I `and itihas for its object-the provisiongof an ad- "stable reclin-inglc'hair so constructed as to admit of its beingreadily assembled without accompanying drawings, which, with the leti ters of referenceinarkedthereon, form a part indicating the same parts throughout the several Views,- and in which drawingsf Figure 1 is aperspective.viewof` achair constructedin accordance with my invention, parts being broken away in order to more clearly illustrate the connection `of -the `seat with the corner-posts. Fig. 2,is a detailed view-in perspective, upon anenlarged scale, showing a'portion ofthe chair-seat and 'corner-post, the same being shown in theirrelative positions,` but slightly separated. yLlFig.
3 is alike view of the chair-seat with the,
i front andrear rails or cross-bars hinged thereto, the said rails being shown `as folded `back 5o against the under face ofthe seat. i
Referencenow being had to the details of of this specification, like letters of` reference;
the drawings by'letter, A and B designate the front and back legs, respectively, which constitute theifront and rear corner-'posts of the chair.
C C indicate the side rails, and D Dithe arms, the said side rails and arms vbeing in the present instance shownfas connected by means of `ornamental posts a a, though it is at once evident that anyother forms of ornamental work, such as is commonly employed in the construction of chairs, may be substitnted for these posts.:
The rear ends of the arms D are extended for a considerable distance beyond the rear posts B, and directly beneath these rearwardly-extending portions of the arms is secured a .metallic fixture or plate E, having its upper edge" notched, as shown' at b D', 'these notchesb'eing `designed to receive a rod F, the ends'of said rod being screw-threadedto `receive the enlarged portions'or heads F.
G is the seat-frame of` 'the chair, to the rear edgeof which is hinged the chair-backI-I, `which when the chair is in use inclines against `the bar F, theangleof inclination depending `upon the set of notches b, in which the bar is placed. `It will be observed that the diameter of` the venlarged portions or knobs F' is greatenthan the space intervening between vthe notched barand the lower face ofthe chaarm. -By this construction it is rendered impossible to remove the bar F from the chair Without first removing `one of the 4knobs. from the end of thebar, as will be readilyinnderstood, thus rendering the accidental :displacement of the bar impossible.
lIt will be observed that my chair is constructed in four sections-viz., the tWo side sections, each of which consists of a i front and rear post or leg, an arm D, a side rail, and the notched plate to receive the crossbar. -The'ot-her sections consistv of the seatfiiame and the chair-back, which is hinged to the rear edge of the seat-frame.
,J and K represent thefront apd rear rails of the chair, said rails being hinged at their upper edges to the `under faces of the front andrear edges of the seat-frame, as shown. Both the front and rear rails J and K are provided* at their endsy with hooked `metallic plates M and 'Iwhich extend outwardly from the ends of the rails and are adapted to enter recesses or slots Oand P, formed for their reception in the inner faces of the 'front and 'I -ro` @railsJ and K,'which are hinged to the chairrear legs or postsof the chai-1*. as shown, the
` notches -fm and 'n in said platei being adapted to engage metallic bars o wll'thin the slots i'n the'legs. The advantages of this construe vtioniwill be at once evident, as in assembling the parts of the chair it is simply necessary that; themetallic plates .at the ends of the seat,v should be inserted in the recesses or slots ofjtlie plates will emgagethe metallic rods or -lhthi9construction' the rails when the seat- ;naybe folded back closely against the lower -ic'eof Ithe seat-frame, thus occupying but. t,little space, and by removing the rod F the back of the chair maybe folded closely against .theupperface of the seat-frame, thus per 4- mittinglthe ch'airto be folded within the smallest possible compass for convenience in reither storage or shipping.
p Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
V1. A chair-seat having rails hinged thereto, the corner-posts or legs of the'chair slotv ted as described, in combination with hooked metallic plates carried by the -ends 'of the rails and adapted to engage keepers located v'within the slots in the posts, substantially as described and for the purpose specified;-
2. In a folding chair, thewcombination with the chair-bottom, the front and Arear rails hinged thereto, the hooked metallicplates, theside rails and arm-rests with legs formed in one section, each leg having `a recess carrying -a pin, the hooked metallic plates carried by the ends of the foldingA rails, and adapted to ft in said sockets, and over the pins, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I'atiix xnyrsignature i in-presence of two witnesses.
