gain b rates gaunt f f'irn;
WILLIAM (J. LESSTER, or NEW YORKQN. Y. Letters Patent No. 61,623, dated January 29, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT iii FIREPLACE HEATERS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERNz Be it known thatI, WILLIAM C. LEss'rnR, of the city, county, and State of New York,"have invented a certain new and useful Improvement on Fire-Place Heaters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a transverse sectional elevation of a fire-place heater constructed according to my improvement; and
Figure 2, a' horizontal section thereof, taken a little above the fire-pot.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in both figures.
The nature of my invention consists in a peculiar'construction of the fire-pot when made upin sections of I cast-iron rings, by combining therewith a loose cap or flange, whereby escape of gas at the joints is restrained and every freedom given for expansion and contraction. v
For the information of others whom it. may concern, I proceed to describe my invention with referenceto the accompanying drawing, omitting, for the most part, description of such parts as are common to other fireplace .heaters. V
A, in the drawing, represents the base of the heater, the top plate of which may have an upwardly projecting ledge, a, to serve as a guide or steadying rim to the fire-pot B, or, rather, too lower section of the same. This firc-pot is made up of cast-iron rings, not simply mounted one uponthe other, bolted to the structure as in certain other heaters, but these rings, 6, are each constructed at their tops by groove or channel, a, so as to receive freely. within it the lower edge of the next ring immediately .above it, thereby giving stability to the whole, with separate freedom for expansionand contraction, or detachment incase of removal and necessary repair, and a lack by the dust gathering inthe groove, 0, ofeach, against escape of obnoxious gases through the joints formed by'the sections into the chamber or space, 0, in front of and partially surrounding the firepot, and which has its outer. shell of open-work cbnstruction to allow, of the heat radiating from the-fire-pot passing therethrough... 'lmfurther secure the heater in this respect, without restricting the expansion or'contraction of the fire-pot, the latter is provided at its top with an independent cap or flange, D, of like annular form with the rings 6, but lapping over or loosely resting on the guide or'partition-plate d of the" heater, and by a downwardly projecting ledge or rim, e, fitting loosely into the groove 0 of the top ring,.which groove-may be faced in or closed on both sides, and in collecting dust will, by the aid of the rim e of the cap, seal the fire pot joint at top withont restraining the rings composing the latter from expanding or contracting, either separately or unit-edly, with freedom from all strain of the fire-pot on either its base on the partition-plate d. To aid the combustion of the gases rising from the fire-pot into'the chamber E above it, I arrange round the lower interior of said ehamhei anordinary or any suitable perforated distributing pipe, to admit oxygen, which, connningling with said gases, efi'ects, as Well understood; the de-sire-Il result. But, instead of supplying said distributor with air, as usual, from the outside or front. portion of the heateiyl arrange the perforated supply pipe y. in rear thereofpand.within the recess in the wall-intowhich the heat-er is set, by which arrangement the supply pipe is not only concealed from view and damage, but is also protected againsthaving its inlets choked either through malice, accident, or evenignorancc. It not being necessary here to describe other parts of the heater represented in the accompanying drawing, I will only remark that heat generated by it may be conveyed t-herefro m to adjoining or upper chambers," in the usual or any suitable \v ay.
What claim herein as new and .nseful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combi1iation-, with the fire-pot B, made up of rings mounted upon and fitting one within the other as described, of the loose flange or cap D, constructed to enter a groove in the top ring and resting on or lapping overthe partition-plate d of the heater, essentially as and for the purpose or purposes herein set forth.
W. C. LESSTER.
