DUMMY LUNG-TESTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Eatent No. 616,085, dated December 20, 1898. Application filed August 24,1898. Serial No. 689,418. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, EDMUND DE MoULIN and ULYsSEs S. DE MOULIN, citizens of the United States, residing at Greenville, in the county of Bond and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Dummy Lung-Tester, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in dummy lung-testers.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of dummy lungtesters and to provide a simple and eflicient one designed to be employed in the initiatory work of secret societies and capable of startling a candidate blowing into it by firing a cartridge or similar explosive and simultaneously discharging a quantity of flour or other powder in his face.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings,'Figure 1 is an elevation of of a dummy lung-tester constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same, the box or casing being open and the device being set for operation. Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating the arrangement of the parts after the device has been operated. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the valve.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures'of the drawings.
1 designates a rectangular box or casing having its top 2 and the side 3 hinged together and also to the body of the box and adapted to open, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, to expose the mechanism. The hinges 4 connect the lower edge of the side 3 to the bottom of the box or casing, and the hinges 5 connect the upper edges of the said side with the top, which when closed is secured by a suitable fastening device, dowelpins 6 being preferably provided to hold the parts perfectly steady when the casing is closed.
Within the casing or box is arranged a longitudinally-disposed U-shaped tube 7, having one side or limb arranged above the other, and the upper side 8 terminates at the front of the casing, which is provided with a dis-' charge-opening 9. The lower side 10 of the tube is extended beyond the casing and is provided with a suitable mouthpiece. The upper side 8 of the tube is provided with an opening 11, located within the casing and normally covered by a sliding sleeve l2,which is adapted to move longitudinally on the tube to cover and uncover the opening 11 for enabling a charge of flour or any other desired substance in powder form to be placed in the tube.
. In order to cause the blast of air through the tube to reach sufficient force to expel the charge of powder with the desired effect, it is provided with a valve 13, preferably located at the upper side of the tube and con sisting of a vertical slide or plate 14 and a cap 15. The slide 14 operates in a slot of the tube and is provided with an aperture 16, lo cated normally below the upper side of the tube and adapted when carried upward into the same to permit-a blast of air to enter the forward or magazine portion of the tube and discharge the contents thereof. When the valve rises, it trips a firing mechanism hereinafter described,and a cartridge or other explosive is discharged. It will thus be seen that the effect of the device is to surprise a person considerably when it is blowninto. The cap, which fits on a vertical tube or branch 17, is provided at one side with an extension 18, and it has a stop 15 atthe lower end of the slide to limit its upward movement.
The device is provided at the back of the casing with a cartridge-support l9,consisting of a plate provided with an annular boss 20 o and having a bore extending through the same and the plate. The bottom of the casing is also provided with a perforation registering with that of the cartridge-supporting device and adapted to permit the escape of gas produced by the discharge of a cartridge. The box or casing is designed to be mounted on a suitable stand 21 or other support, and its bottom will be elevated, so that the gas may escape freely.
The cartridge-support is arranged in the path of a spring-actuated lever 22, fulcrumed on a suitable support, and having one end arranged to strike the cartridge-support, and its other end is connected to a coiled spring 23. The lever is preferably provided with a pivot 24:, which has its ends journaled in inher and outer brackets or supports 25 and 26. The spring is provided at its ends with hooks, one being linked into a perforation of the lever and the other engaging an eye 27 of the front of the casing. The striking end of the lever carries a substantially L-shaped arm 28, extending inward laterally from the said lever and arranged to be engaged by a substantially L-shaped trigger 29, fulcrumed on a horizontal pin 30 at the outer end of its short arm. The short arm of the trigger is provided with a recess 31 to receive the arm of the striking-lever, and the long arm of the trigger, when the parts are set as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings, has its outer end located above the valve in position to be engaged by the same when the said valve rises sufficiently to bring its opening or aperture within the tube, so that the explosion of the cartridge and the discharge of the flour will be simultaneous. The trigger pin or pivot is supported by a bracket 32 and a plate 33, which is screwed or otherwise fastened to the rigid side of the box or casing, and the U shaped tube is supported by brackets 33, provided at their tops with circular openings to receive the upper side of the U- shaped tube and having forked lower portions embracing the lower side of the tube and extended to form feet, which are screwed or otherwise secured to the bottom of the box or casing. These brackets 33 may be constructed of a single strip of metal doubled to form the round top portion and suitably connected at the vertical portion between the top and bottom.
A dial 34: is supported above the top of the casing by a short tube or stem 35 and is provided with a hand 36 to impart to the device the appearance of a testing-machine; but instead of arranging the dial as shown in the accompanying drawings it may be mounted on the front of the casing directly above the discharge-opening 9.
The invention has the following advantages: The device, which possesses great simplicity, strength, and durability, is exceedingly inexpensive in construction and is positive and reliable in operation. It is especially adapted for initiatory work of secret societies and is capable of surprising and startling an unsuspecting person blowing into it.

A device of the class described comprising a casing, a tube adapted to be blown into and provided with a discharge end adapted to contain a suitable powder, a valve interposed between the magazine and the blow end of the tube, and firing mechanism arranged to be tripped by the valve, whereby a cartridge may be exploded simultaneously with the discharge of the said powder, substantially as described.
2. A device of the class described compris-- ing a casing, a tube adapted to be blown into and capable of discharging a quantity of powder, a valve obstructing the passage of the tube and adapted to be opened when the air within the tube reaches a given pressure, and firing mechanism arranged to be tripped by the movement of the valve, substantially as described.
3. A device of the class described comprising a casing, a substantially U-shaped tube arranged within the casing and having one end extending beyond the same, and its other end terminating at one of the walls of the casing, the shorter side of the tube forming a magazine and provided with an opening, a sliding sleeve normally covering the opening, and a valve, substantially as described.
4. A device of the class described, com prising a casin g, a tube, a valve mounted on the tube, a spring-actuated striking-lever, and a trigger arranged to engage the striking-lever and located in the path of the valve, whereby the lever will be released by the movement of the valve, substantially as described.
5. A device of the class described comprising a casing, a tube, a vertically-movable valve mounted on the tube, a striking-lever fulcrumed between its ends and provided at one end, with a laterally disposed arm, a spring connected with the other end of the lever, a trigger arranged to engage the laterally-extending arm of the lever to set the latter and located in the path of the valve, and means for supporting a cartridge or other explosive in a position to be engaged by the striking end of the lever, substantially as described.
6. A device of the class described compris ing a tube, a vertically-movable valve, a striking-lever fulcrumed between its ends and provided at its striking end with a laterallydisposed arm, a spring connected with the other end of the lever, and an L-shaped trigger fulcrumed at one end, provided with a recess to receive the arm of the lever and arranged in the path of the valve, substantially as described.
7. A device of the class described comprising a tube having a slot, and a valve composed of a vertically-movable slide operating in the said slot and having an aperture adapted to permit the escape of air through the tube, and a cap connected with and adapted to operate the slide, substantially as described.
8. A device of the class described comprising a casing, a tube adapted to be blown into for discharging a quantity of powder, and a valve obstructing the passage of the air and adapted to be opened when the air within the device reaches a given pressure, whereby the powder will be discharged with the desired force, substantially as described.
9. A device of the class described comprisinga tube a slide disposed transversely of the tube and having an opening normally out of register with the same, and means for operating the slide when the air within the tube reaches a given pressure, whereby the opening will be brought in position to permit the escape of air through the tube, substantially as described.
