Description

No. 6|5,793. Patented Dec. I3, 1898.
G. T. BOWMAN. 7 HAND GRIP FOR BICYCLE HANDLE BARS.
(Application filed Jim 80, 1897.)
No Model.)
n aowmmh X30 QXX/o NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE T. BOWMAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAN D-G RIP FOR BICYCLE HANDLE-BARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 615,793, dated December 1898- Application filed June 30, 1897. Serial No. 642,933. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE 'l. BOWMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and Stateof Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Hand-Grip for Bicycle Handle-Bars, of which the following is a specification.
Riders of bicycles when speeding or scorching approach with their bodies a horizontal position and therefore use handle-bars which are dropped or curved down at their outer ends. WVhen riding slowly, the riders occupy an upright or erect position and place their hands near the center of the handle-bars; but even under these circumstances the center of the handle-bar is frequently too low for the comfort of the rider.
Objects of my invention are to provide attractive, eficient, comparatively inexpensive, and satisfactory means applicable to any handle-bars and adapted to permit the rider when going slowly to occupy an erect position with an easy and comfortable support for the hands2'. e., a support ranging crosswise of the regular or ordinary handle-barand to provide in connection with the hand-grip a lug or attaching device for carrying a flag, lantern, baggage, and the like.
To these ends my invention comprises the improvements hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature, characteristic features, and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following descriptiomtaken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a handlebar having hand-grips applied to its center portion and arranged and constructed in accordance with my invention. Figs. 2, 3, and 4. are side views of hand-grips for bicycle handle-bars, showing the same provided with a lug for carrying a pennant, a lantern, a parcel, and the like; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view illustrating a hand-grip of my invention provided with material which contacts with the hand of the rider.
In the drawings, a is a ring-like handle, of metal or other material, provided with a halfround part a of a clamp. This part a is equippedwith ears 05*.
b is a second half-round part of a clamp and is also provided with ears I).
c are clamp-screws or bolts that engage said ears.
The parts (1, 1), and c constitute a circular clamp, and this circular clamp lies in the same plane as the ring-like handle a.
cl is a lug to which may be attached a pennant-carrier d, or a lantern-holder 01 or a hook d or the ring a may not be equipped with a lug, and such construction is shown in Fig. 5.
In Fig. 5 I have illustrated the ring-like handle a as provided withmaterial a which may be held to place by screws a and which is well adapted for contact with the riders hands.
The ring-like handle a may be made hollow and may be partly cut away, as indicated, for example, at a in Fig. 1, whereby its weight'may be diminished.
In use the clamp is applied to the center portion of the handle-bar e-for example, as shown in Fig. 1by releasing the clampscrews, placing the half-round parts of the clamp on the handle-bars, and then replacing the clamp-screws.
From the foregoing description it is plain that a hand-grip of my invention can be applied, even by those unskilled in mechanic arts, to the handle-bar of any machine, and when so applied the ring-like handles afford means by which the rider can sit erect, with his hands in a comfortable, graceful, and easy position.
It Will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which my'invention appertains that modifications may be made in details without departing from the spirit thereof. Hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts hereinabove set forth, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings; but,
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention; what I claim as new, with ears; and clamp -screws cooperating and desire to secure by Letters Patent, iswith theears, substantially a specified. 10
An extra hand-grip for bicycle handle-bars In testimony whereof I have hereunto comprising a ring-like handle a, substantially signed my name.
as shown and described, having an integral GEORGE T. BOWMAN. half-round part a, of a clamp arranged in In presence ofthe same plane and provided with ears; a W. J. JACKSON,
second half-round part of a clamp provided K. M. GILLIGAN.
