No. 6l5,.l04. Patented Nov. 29, I898. F. L. PDTTERF.
APPARATUS FOR EXTRACTING OIL.
(Applicationfiled May 9, 1898.!

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FANNIE L. POTTERF, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
APPARATUS FOR EXTRACTING OIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 615,104, dated November 29, 1898. Application filed May 9, 1898. Serial No- 680,199. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FANNIE L. POTTERF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Separating Oils and Fats from Substances; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in apparatus for reducing fats and oils by chemical means, and in carrying out the invention it is my purpose to provide a receptacle in which the substance from which the oil is to be separated is placed and acted uponby suitable chemicals, after which the oil may be drawn 01f after being strained by a suitable screen carried within the receptacle;
More specifically theinvention consists of a conical-shaped receptacle which is mounted in a suitable standard, said receptacle having a tubing connected to one side thereof and communicating with the lower funnel-shaped end of the receptacle, which latter is provided with a sight-aperture protected with glass or mica, whereby the chemical action may be watched and the quantity of oil separated determined.
To these ends and to such others as the in: vention may pertain the same consists, further, in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout both views, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved oil-separator/ Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional view through the receptacle and attachments.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the receptacle in which the substance from which the oil is to be separated is placed. This receptacle is made, preferably, of the shape shown and has its lower end tapering to the outlet B, at which location a stopcock may be located for the purpose of drawing off the oil that has been separated. The upper end of the receptacle has a lid or cover 0, through which the substance is placed in the receptacle. At a suitable distance from the lower end of the receptacle is disposed a screen D, through which the oil passes and accumulates in the space below the screen. In the side wall of the oil-receiving portion of the receptacle is a glass or mica covered aperture F, provided for the purpose of ascertaining the quantity of oil that has accumulated and also of noting the chemical action that is taking place within, while a second and elongated glass-covered sight-aperture E is pro vided in the portion of the receptacle above the screen for the purpose of seeing the quantity of substance from which the oil isbeing extracted.
A support I-I, having a band J, is provided, in which latter the conical portion of the receptacle rests when in use. This bandJ has an offset J to receive the tube K, which latter is provided forthe purpose of pouring in the chemical through the funnel K at the upper end of the receptacle. The lower end of the tube K communicates with the portion of the receptacle beneath the said screen, as shown, and the longitudinal portion of the tubing is fastened to the outer side wall of the receptacle, as illustrated. Any suitable solvent may be employed, dependent upon the character of the material being treated.
In adjusting the apparatus for use the fatty substance from which it is desired to have the oil separated is placed in the receptacle and the chemical, of whatever kind, which is used as a solvent is poured into the filling-tube K and acts upon the fatty substance, and the oil that is reduced may be drawn off at the lower end of the receptacle, the sight-aperture being provided so that observations may be made from the outside without taking off the cover.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a receptacle having a conical lower portion with a screen therein, and a filling-tube extending from near the lower end of the receptacle below the screen and extending upward alongside the inclined outer wall of the receptacle and parallel therewith and secured to said wall near its upper end and provided with a funnel at its upper end, of a support having a band encircling the receptacle above the lower end of the filling-tube and ofifset to receive and. embrace is said tube, all substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FANNIE L. POTTERF.
