Description

No. 65,028. Patented Nov. 29, I898.
J. H. KUHN.
RAILWAY RAIL CONNECTION.
(Application filed Mar. 25, 1898.)
(No modem z INVE TOR y mmald ATTy UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
JOHN H. KUHN, OF MASSILLON, OHIO.
RAILWAY-RAIL CONNECTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 615,028, dated November 29, 1898.
Application filed March 25, 1898. Serial No. 675,202. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN H. KUHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Massilion, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Rail Connections; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which Figure l is a View showing the rails connected together. Fig. 2 is a view showing portions of the rails set at an angle to each other, so as to properly enter the notched tenon. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the connection. Fig. 4 is a view showing the mortise end of the rail. Fig. 5 is a View showing tenon end of a rail.
The present invention has relation to railway-rail connections designed to connect railway-rails together; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawmgs.
In the accompanying drawings, A and B represent the railway-rails, which are formed in the usual manner, reference being had to my improved device for connecting the ends together.
The rail A is provided with the mortise or opening a, which is formed in the bottom or lower portion of the rail and connects or communicates with the opening 17, which opening is located substantially as sh own in the drawings. At the inner end of the mortise or recess a is located the ledge or shoulder c, which ledge or shoulder is extended into the recesses, substantially as illustrated in Fig. 4.
The rail B is provided with the tenon d, which tenon is provided at its end adjacent to the end of the rail with the notch c, said notch being located and formed substantially as shown in Fig. 5. The opposite end of the tenon d is provided with the narrowed extension f, and below the narrowed extension f the end of the'tenon d is rounded, as illustrated in the drawings, and is so formed for the purpose of better connecting the ends of the rails together. The end of the rail A is also rounded for the purpose of providing a convenient way in connecting the rails, as hereinafter described.
The top or upper portion of the rail A is provided with the integral portion g, which integral portion is seated into the notch e, as illustrated in Fig. 3, and is for the purpose of preventing any longitudinal movement of the rails after they have been placed or connected together.
In use the tenon d is slipped into the mortise or opening at until the notch e comes directly under the integral portion g, after which the rail A is dropped into the position illustrated in Fig. 1, thereby placing the top or upper portion of the tenon d into the opening For the purpose of allowing for contraction and expansion the opening I) is formed somewhat longer than the upper portion of the tenon d, thereby leaving a space, such as h, between the rails proper and the rail end of the tenon.
It will be understood that in connecting the rails together they should be placed or brought to an angle one to the other, and when the tenon d has been sufficiently entered the rails can be brought into a horizontal position, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the railway-rails A and B, the mortise or opening a formed in the end of the rail A, the opening I) communicating with the opening a, the ledge or shoulder 0 extended into the opening a, the tenon 61 provided with the notch e and the narrowed ex tension f, and the integral portion g located adjacent to the opening I), substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. KUHN.
