To ALL wHoM 1T MAY coNcERN:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. WELLS, of St. Anthony, in the county of Hennepin, and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and improved Peat Oar; and I do hereby declarethat the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formingpart of this specification, in w'nch- Figure 1 is a side view of my invention.
Figure 2,' an end view of the same, partly in section.
Similar' letters' of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a new and improved car for transportingand drying peat blocks or bricks from the machine or place where they are prepared to the drying-house, where they remain until they become suli cierltly' dry' for fuel. I v
AThe invention consists in a novel construction of the car, as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby,
one person is enabled to load and unload-the car with the greatest facility.
A represents the b'ottom or bed of the car, which is mounted on four wheels B. This bottomor bed is a rectangularframe, provided with transverse slats a, placed at au vequal andv suitable distance apart. .To one side of this bottom or bed A there .are secured Vtwo ,uprights, C C, between which a series of frames, D, is
pivoted, as shown atb. These frames are constructed precisely similarv to the bed or bottom A ofthe car, with the exception that they are not quite so heavy, the side and end timbers being much lighter. The front parts of these frames have each a pendent screw or rod. e, in them, one at each end, to serve as a support for the same, the screws Aor rods of one framerresting uponthe front end of the frame directly underneath it. The uppermost frame D has a leg, E, attached to it at eachV end `andat its outer or front part by pivots il, the lower ends of said legs fitting in staples e-at the front and rear ends of the bed or bottom A of the car. The uprghts O O are each formed with a shoulder, f,v to serve as bearings for' the legs E-when the uppermost `frame D is raised,
- as'shown in red in iig. 2. The lower frames are retained in'an elevatedv state by hooks g, the hook of one'fram'e being tted in a staple in the frame immediately below it. Inv loading the car all the frames D are/elevated, and the bed or bottom A is first loaded with the peat blocks or bricks; the lowermost frame Disthen lowered and lled and the other frames lowered and loaded consecutively. In unloading the car the blocks or brickslare taken from the uppermost frame D, which, when empty, is raised and' supported by the legs E resting on the shoulders F off the uprights C C, and the other frames are consecutivelyv unloaded and .hooked to the frame immediately above it.
By this simple arrangement one person may load" and unload the car with the greatest facility.V
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,-
A car for transporting and drying peat, cozxstructedewith a series of frames, arranged substantially in the manner as herein shown and described. i 4 i e THO. J. WELLS.
