To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK L. CARLTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVest Sullivan, in the county of Hancock and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coal-Hods; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to coal-hods; and it consists, essentially, of a covered spout projected forwardly at or near the lower or bot tom plate, having a hinged covering-lid and a sliding bent fastening-rod for holding the lid in closed position over the mouth or spout. The object of the present invention is to facilitate the feeding of coal to a stove or furnace from the lower portion of a coal-110d in a convenient manner without creating dust or depositing a sediment adjacent to the stove or furnace and also preventing the dropping of the pieces of coal from the hod, the parts being simple and effective in their construction and operation, strong and durable, and comparatively inexpensive in the cost of manufacture.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a coal-hod embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the fastening-rod. Referring to the drawings, wherein similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views, the numeral 1 designates the body of a coalscuttle, having a bail 2 and a grip 3 at the rear. The lower front portion of the body 1 .is extended and formed in to a mouth or spout 4:, having a front inclined face 5. To the upper part of the said mouth or spout is hinged a covering lid or door 6 of the same contour as the inclined face 5. By the inclined construction of the front end of the mouth or spout the lower part of the latter is projected, so that it may conveniently rest on a part of the feed-opening of a stove or range, and extending from the rear of the coal-hod and through the bottom flange 7 is a spring-rod 8, having a forward bent end 9 and a rear looped end 10. The said spring-rod is freely revoluble in the flange 7 and is adapted to be turned by the loop 10, so that the angularlybent end thereof will fit over the lower edge of the covering lid or door 6 and hold the same in closed position while transporting coal and when the scuttle is not in use for feeding the coal contained therein to a stove or furnace. It will be seen that the loop 10 on the rear of the rod 8 closely bears against the adjacent part of the flange 7 and holds the angnlarly-bent end 9 securely clamped against the lower end of the coveringlid or door. In using the coal-scuttle for feeding coal intoa stove or furnace it is lifted and the loop 10 turned to release the covering lid or door 6 and can be drawn backwardly in the flange '7 out of the way. The rod 8 is con veniently manipulated through the rear position of the loop 10 and is preferably made of yielding material to efficiently attain the desired result. WVhen the rod 8 is turned to release the angularly-bent end 9 thereof in connection with the door, the weight of the coal behind the door forces the latter open automatically and permits ready egress of the coalfromthesaidhod. Whenthecoveringlid or door is arranged at a slight angle above the outer end of the mouth or spout, it forms a shield to prevent the coal from flying outwardly or dropping from the stove being fed, and, if desired, the said covering lid or door can be thrown entirely back against the upper part of the front of the hod.

It is obviously apparent that many minor changes in the details of construction might be made and substituted for those shown and described without in the least departing from the nature or spirit of the invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- A coal-hod having a forwardly-projecting mouth or spout at the lower portion thereof formed with a front forwardly-inclined edge, said hod also having a lower flange with a central opening therethrough and a rear inclined wall, a door hinged at its upper edge to the upper wall surrounding said mouth, and a spring-rod rotatably mounted in said opening of the flange under the bottom of the In testimony whereof I have signed this hod and having a front angularly-bent end specification in the presence of two subscribto engage the lower edge of the door to hold ing witnesses.
