KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS:
That LJ. H. WALKER, of the city land county of Worcester, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful improvenients in Machines for Cutting Soles for Bootsand Shoes from whole sides of leather; and I do hereby deelarethat the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip'tienof the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figurel represents a perspective view of my improved machine.
Figu're 2 represents a central vertical section, the line of sectionl being from front to back.
Figure 3 represents a top orplan view of one of the dies used to-cnt seles for boots and shoes; and I Figure 4 represents a side view of the die or cutter-shown in iig; 3.
The principalv object of my present improvement is to facilitate the cutting of soles for boots and shoes from i'vhole sides of leather, in accordance with the patent granted to me on the 22d day of August, D. 1865.
In the drawings, -A represents the floor or platform, upon which the legs'B of the'machine, andthe supports C of 'theta'ble or plaforrn D, rest. E is .the lower part of the frame of the machine, the front lower section or part Fy of which is removable, while the upper front' part E is connected to the front box part G of the upper part H of the frame of the machine by a'neck piece H. The upper and lower parts E H are con; nected at the reai` by a'strong upright piece, I. In suitable bearings, a In, upon the part H rests and turns the main shaft J, from the head of which projects the eccentric or crank-pin c, which receives the upper end of the connecting-rod or link d,'the lower end of -Which is hinged at e to the division piece'which unites the-side pieces gg, which extendA up from the top of platen K, and serve as guides to retain said platen in ,proper position. l The side pieces gg are, fitted to slide with a close it in the guide-box G, which connectsvsgith the neck piece Hf of the main frame. Platen K for convenience is not made solid, but with an outer rim, h, comlbined with central or cross-ribs, e'. Between the parts F and Ei are fitted four gears, two on each side. -These gears have screw-threads cut in' them to fit four-screw-bolts or rods, which pass through'the gears; The four screw-bolts or'rods pass up through pieces F and E, andA are fastened securely7 to the bottom of the bedpiece or cutting-block L. The screw-bolts and gears on one side have left-hand screw-threads, so that when the screw-shaft or spindle M, which tits into all four gears-two on each side-is turned, the bed-piece or cutting-block is elevated or lowered in a horizontal position. The gears being fitted into slots when they are revolvedby the screw-spindle M, all the screw-bolts are elevated or depressed, together with the cutting-bloek L, so lthat the latter can be accurately adjusted n respect to theplaten, whereby the leather can be cut by the die without the edge of the latter being forced in to the face of theblo'ck or headpiece. v
In lieul of the device abovei'descrihed for adjusting the bed', an inclined plane may be fitted betweenthe bed and frame E, so that when said inclined pla-ne is moved `by a screw, or otherwise, in one direction, the bed will be elevated, and lowered when it is moved inthe othery direction. Tlre upper part N of. the bed or cuttingblock is removable, so that the face of this part ofthe block can be planed off when roughenedby much use.. The block is cut so. that the grain of the wood runs up and down. Upon the rear of shaft J' is placeda balance-wheel, J', to which is fastened thefdriving-pulley'O, both of which run loose upon the end of shaft JQ- A. clutch, P, is placed uponv the end of4 shaft J, the arms not of which pass through guides connected with pulley O an'd wheel J; a cap, o, on the end of shaft J prevents the clutch from slipping olf the shaft. Clutch l? is operated by the bent lever Q, fulcrumed at p, the long arm S extending under the frame E, and attached to the piece F by a spiral spring, x, as'fully shown in the drawings. The actionA of the spring :v keeps the clutch and its arms n n back, so that shaft J and platen yK are not operated only when the front end of the long arm S of the lever Q- is depressed so as to throw. clutch P forward, as shown inV red lines, fig. 2, in which case the arms n n are forced forward so vfar that they engage with the lugs or ears onthe huh z of shaft J. The screw spindle M may be made with a'thread cut only a few times around at the points where. the thread` engages the gears; the balance of the spindle may be left blank, and may be smaller for convenience of manufacture. l
The operation is as follows: The operator takes the side of sole leather and spreads it upon table D, the part where heldesires to commence cutting being placed under theplaten K. The'cutting-block or bed L having been adjusted, he places the die T upon` the leather under the platen, and then, with his foot, depresses the long arm S of lever Q, thereby throwing clutch P into operation, when motion is imparted to 'shaft J, and the platen K is forced down upon die T, and a sole is cut from the whole side of leather. As soon as the cut is made the operator removes his foot from lever Q, and springs: causes the clutch to move back, andshaft J stops by the time the-platen is elevated, as shown in iig. l. The operator now turns bis die and m0ves tl1e leather, if necessary, and the operation is repeated until the whole side of leather is eut up, according to the mode secured to me by Letters Patent granted on the 22d day of August, 1865.' By the use of the open and independent die`1, the operator can place it 'wry quickly in the desired `po`sition,-while he can as quickly remove the die, and, by a sudden blow, knock out the cut soles. This lmachine has been pnt to a pratical test with very important results.
Having described my machine for cutting soles for boots and shoes, what I claim as new and of-my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination and arrangement of the broad 'table D for supporti-ng the side of leather, 'with the l adjustable bed or cutting-block L, and the reciprocating platen K, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination and arrangement, with the table D, bed L, platen K, and shaft J, of the peculiarly constructed frame, composed of the parts marked E H E and G, substantially as described.
