CONTINUOUS CENTRlFUGAL SEPARATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,764, dated November 22, 1898.

13e it known that I, HERMAN DE -VRIEs ROBB, a subject of the Queen of IIolland, residingin Amsterdam, Netherlands, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Continuous Centrifugal Separators, of which the following is a specification'.
'lhis invention has been patented in Great Britain under date of February 1, 1807, No. 2,597.
This invention relates to centrifugal sepa'-V rators such as are used in the sugar. industry for the purpose of separating the sugar-crystals from the syrup and in which the action is continuous. y
The objects of the invention are to reducey as far as possible the labor of handling the material to be operated upon and to simplify and increase the efficiency of the machine as compared with others of the same class.
lVith these objects in view I arrange the. separator so that the material-to be dried is continuously fed in at the top thereof, passes through the machine in one direction only, and after having been dried passes out through the open bottom of the separator and falls directly into a suitable receptacle. I also provide various means of adjustment, as hereinafter fully described, so that the eilective areas of certain parts may be varied to suit the material to be treated. j
The accompanying drawings illustrate such a separator embodying my improvements.
Figure I is an elevation in medial section, the adjustable portions of the apparatus beingshown in their mean positions. Figs.` II and III are respectively fragmentary plan views ofthe spraying device andthe drivingforks, and Fig. 1V is a fragmentary section on the line A A of Fig. I.

1 is a fixed casing inclosing the working parts of the machine and provided with the channels or gutters il and Z5, the upper gutter 2 to receive the first syrup and the lower gutter 3 to receive the second syrup. 'lllese gutters have, as shown, a falling gradient to ihei r respective outlets 2 and 3".
Al is a cylindrical rotating perforated sheetmetal casing or open-bottomeifl basket carried by a. number of T-burs from a helieal-armml steel casting 6, securely keyed to the main spindle 7, a perforated-curved plate 8 being employed to connect thebasket 4to the bars 5. 9 is a conical rotating perforated sheetmetal casing or open-bottomed basket earried from an armed steel casting 10, which is fitted on and adapted to slide axially on the cylindrical boss 6 of the casting G, the axial position of the conical basket relatively to the cylindrical basket being adjusted by the lock-nuts shown. The double thickness of the baskets, as shown in the drawings, represents the outer perforated metal and the innerlining of gauze, the latter being held in position by the rings shown.

The outer iixed casing 1 is provided with covers 27, and the upper conical portion 28 of the casing may be formed in halves with a suitable joint.
Vhen the material is first fed into the machine, its passage downward is facilitated by the propelling action of the helical arms of the casting 6. A section of these arms on* the line A A is shown in Fig. IV. It willbeseen that the action is continuous and unidirectional and that in the arrangement shown.

Although I have described the machine` au open-bottomed rotating cylindrical basket,
open at top and bottom, forming a prolonga tion ol' the conical basket downward and carried from the same spindle; substantially as described and illustrated.

In combination; a xed outer casing provided with upper and lower gutters; a rotating conical basket, open at top and bottom and placed with its larger end lowermost; an open-bottomed rotating cylindrical basket overlapping thc lower end of the conical basket and carried from the Sallie spindle; and means for axially adjusting thc conical basket rela-tively to the cylindrical basket, so as piece secured to the said spindle; a second central armed piecefitting on the boss of the said first armed piece and axially adjustable thereon; and a conical basket, open at top and bottom, carried from the second central piece, so as to be adjustably overlapped by the cylindrical basket; substantially as described.

In combination with the spindle, the axiall y-ad j ustable conical basket, the cylindrical basket, and the circular diaphragm, a .central member secured to the spindle, the said member serving as the means for carrying the cylindrical basket forming the inlet for the material, and provided with helical arms to assist the descent of the latter; substantially as described and illustrated.

and a circular diaphragm placed within the conical basket and carried bya central picco fitting and axially adjustable on the boss of the second-mentioned central piece, so that the said diaphragm although partaking inthe movement of the conical basket'is axially adjustable with respect to the latterysubstantially as described and illustrated. l
7. In combination with the outer fixed casing, having the upper and lower gutters, and the rotating parts of the separator; the vertically-adjustablc deilecting-plate l!) carried by saidl casing and the depending plates 2:! attached to said plato 19; substantially as doscribed and illustrated. f
