EAVES-TROUGH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,632, dated November 22, 1898.
Application filed February 23, 1898. Serial No. 671,226. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM STRIPE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aultman, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Eaves-Troughs; and I do hereby declare that the following'is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, in which Figurel is a perspective view showing two sections of eaves-trough connected together. Fig. 2 is a view of an eaves-trough section, showing the connecting-wires attached thereto. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the connecting plate. Fig. 4 is a transverse section through line X X, Fig. Fig. 5 is a detached view of one of the wire connectingclamps.
The present invention has relation to eavestroughs; and it consists in the diiferent parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Similar numbers of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings,1 represents an eaves-trough section, which may be 01": any desired length, reference being had to convenience in manufacturing and connecting the sections together. The sections 1 are originally formed of plastic clay, after which they are properly burned in a kiln. The upper sides or edges of the eaves-trough 1 are provided with the flanges 2, which flanges are located substantially at right angles to the trough 1, as illustrated in Fig. 4, said flanges being formed integral with the eaves-trough and are for the purpose of giving strength andatthe sametime providingameansforconnecting the sections together, as hereinafter described. For the purpose of adding strength to the eaves-trough sections the bottom or under sides of the sections are each provided with the rib or bead 3, said head being preferably located midway between the flanges 2, as illustrated in Fig. 4. The ends of the sections 1 are provided with the grooves 4, which grooves are formed of any desired depth, preferably about one inch, but may be varied without departing from the nature of my invention. The connecting-plate 5 is preferably formed of sheet metal and of such a size that it will be received into the grooves when the ends of two sections 1 are joined together,
' or, in other words, one half of the plate resting inone section and ,the other half in the opposite adjacent section.
For the purpose of uniting the sections together the wire clamps 6 are provided and are passed through apertures, such as 7, formed in the flanges and ribs, as illustrated in the drawings, and the Wires composing the clamps twisted or otherwise connected, so that the ends forming the eaves-trough joint Will be securely connected together.
It Will be understood that if desired cement or solder may be used to fill the grooves, thereby making a water-tight joint. It will be understood that a sufficient number of sections, such as 1, are to be joined together to produce an eaves-trough of the desired length and that hangers are to be employed to hold the eaves-trough in proper position.
Having fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described eaves-trough sections provided with the flanges 2, the ribs 3, and the grooves 1, formed in the ends of the sections, the connecting-plate 5, located in the grooves of adjacent sections, and the Wire clamps, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimonythat I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two Witnesses.
IIIRAM STRIPE.
