NITED STATES' PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK GATIVARD, OF HALIFAX, CANADA.
GAME OR TOY DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,542, dated November 22, 1898.
Application filed November 10,1897. Serial No. 658,097. (N0 modem T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK GATWARD, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Halifax, in the Province of Nova Scotia and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Game or Toy Devices, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to games and toys; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is designed to entertain the young as well as those of mature years.
The invention is fully disclosed in the fol lowing specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved game or toy device, part of the construction being shown in section; and Fig. 2, a plan view thereof.
In the drawings forming part of this specifica-tion the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in the practice of my invention I provide a device of the class herein specified which consists of a board 5,which is provided at each end with a handle 6 and near each end with a cupshaped receptacle 7, and between the cupshaped receptacle 7 at one end and the handle U is an upright spring-arm 8,which is very elastic and which is composed of thin springsteel, whalebone, or any suitable material, and connected with the upper end of the spring-arm 8, as shown at 9, is a cord 10, to the free end of which is secured a ball 11, which is preferably composed of papierm ache or similar material. The cord 10 is equal to or greater in length than the distance from the top of the arm 8 to the opposite receptacle 7, and arranged centrally of the board 5 is a bridge 12, composed of wire or other suitable material.
The game consists in manipulating one end of the board 5 by means of the corresponding handle 6, so as to throw the ball 11 from said end into the opposite receptacle 7, and the bridge 12 is not an essential element of the invention; but I prefer to employ it, as it renders the successful performance of the above feat more difficult.
This device may be used either as a puzzle or game device, and in the latter event any desired number may be engaged in the game, and the game will consist in determining which of the players engaged in the game can succeed in lodging the ball 11 in the receptacle 7 in a given number of trials.
The arm or standard 8 need not necessarily be composed of spring material; but I pre fer to employ such material, as it renders the lodging of the ball 11 in the receptacle 7 much more difficult, because the elasticity of the standards prevents the cord from having a fixed point upon which it swings or revolves, and this must be taken into consideration, as it controls .the extent to which the ball moves in any particular direction, for it is obvious that movement of the ball differs when supported by a fixed or yielding standard.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The herein-described game or toy device, consisting of a board having a cup-shaped receptacle near each end thereof, an elastic standard between one of said receptacles and the adjacent end of the board, anda cord secured to said standard and provided at its free end with a ball, the length of said cord being sufficient to extend to the receptacle at the other end of the board.
2. The herein-described game or toy device, consisting of a board having a cup-shaped receptacle near each end thereof a transverse bridge between said receptacles, an elastic standard between one of said receptacles and the adjacent end of the board, and a cord secured to said standard and provided at its free end with a ball, the length of said cord being sufficient to extend to the receptacle at the other end of the board.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 2d day of November, 1897.
FRANK GATWARD.
