No, 6|4,5'25. PatentedNov. 22, I898. H.20PFL CLIP FOB AX HANDLES.
(Application filed Jan. 13, 1898.)
(No Model.)
WITNESS-ES: INVENTOR NITED STATES PATENT Prion.
HENRY ZOPFI, OF MONROE, WISCONSIN.
CLIP FOR AX-HANDLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,525, dated November 22, 1898.
Application filed J'anuarylS, 1898. Serial No. 666,522. (No model.)
T0 to whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY ZOPFI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monroe, in the county of Green, in the State of Wiscon sin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clips for Ax-Handles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the drawings forming a part of this application.
In the drawings, Figure I is a side View of an aX-handle. Fig. II is a side and Fig. III a bottom view of my clip. Fig. IV shows the securing-rivets. Figs. V and VI are side views and cross-sections, respectively, of an rm and ax-handle embodying my invention.
As a means of strengthening the ax-handle A, I provide the clip B, which is a piece of metal fitted to the outside of the ax-handle and shaped and proportioned to form a smooth surface without lateral projection beyond the sides of the ax-handle, while at its forward end it is let into the aX-handle sufficiently to enable the forward end of the clip to enter the eye of the head for about one inch, the handle being slightly and gradually recessed, as at b, for this purpose, the clip lying from a to b of the handle, as shown in Fig. I. I secure this clip and at the same time strengthen the handle against splitting at this point by rivets D D passing through the clip and through the depth of the handle and headed at each end.
As is well known, in the ordinary use of an ax there is great wear on the'handle immediately adjacent to the head, and when by accident the handle strikes instead of the edge of the ax, as when the workman overreaohes the Wood to be slit, the handle often splits. My clip not only receives the force of the blow in such a case, but the rivets prevent such' splitting of the handle. In this respect my device operates differently from what it would if the clip were merely secured by a screw. Also my clip is much less expensive than one in which there is a ring or ferrule on the clip for embracing the handle, while for most purposes I hold it fully as satisfactory. Furthermore, my clip can easily be retightened, which cannot be done with a ring or ferrule in case the handle shrinks. The projection of the clip into the eye of the ax also assists in securing the clip to the handle, while the recessing of the ax is so small and at such a point as to have no material effect in weakening the handle.
I claim In an ax, the combination with the handle of a strengthening-clip of the Width of the lower edge of the handle placed on the under side thereof and with its forward end only slightly set in and fitting within the eye of the head to help secure the clip and rivets passing through the clip and entirely through the depth of the handle, not only securing the former but also serving to prevent the latter from splitting.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY ZOPFI.
Witnesses 2 GABRIEL Z OPFI, CLEMENT ZOPHY.
