J. E. MURPHY.
PAINT BRUSH.
(Application med .my so; 189s.)

VZNTR F kmh Nams PETERS to. FHOTaUTHc., WASHINGTON. u. c,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
.IAMES E. MURPHY, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
PAINT-BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,845, dated November 8, 1898.
Application led July 30,1898. Serial No. 687,246. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JAMES E. MURPHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paint-Brushes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in paintbrushes, and more particularly to means for holding the bristles in the head.
l In brushes as heretofore made the bristles havebeen held in the head by various devices-as, for instance, by inserting them in holes, by a Wrapping of twine or wire, by metal clamps engaging the bristles,'and by leather bands tacked to the wooden head. The swelling and shrinking of the bristles due to wetting and drying loosens the bristles and destroys the supporting material. In my improved brush the bristles are clamped between bars and at the same time bent, so as to prevent the bristles from working loose.
In the drawings accompanying this speciiication I have shown the preferred form of my invention, in which similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts, and in which` Figure l is a sectional view on line a: of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a side elevation with one of the clamping members broken away and the bristles removed. j Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the parts of the head With the bristles removed, and Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the clamping members in proper position with relation to each other. Fig. 5 illustrates a cross-section of a round brush embodying my invention.
In the drawings, A represents a handle portion, integral with which is the flat head B, which is provided on opposite sides with longitudinal laterally-extending projections C. The clamps D consist of trough-like members which embrace the head and receive in their troughs the longitudinal laterally-extending projections C of the head. The bristles E are laid upon the sides of the head, and then the side clamp D is laid over the bristles. The same operation is then performed on the other side of the brush, and the two side clamps are securely and strongly drawn and held together by means of the screws F, whereby the bristles are sharply bent over the projections O and also clamped between the edges G of the side clamps and the body of the head, as clearly illustrated in Fig. l. The sharp bending of the bristles around the projections C secures them in place in such a manner that legitimate use of the brush or improper abuse thereof will never succeed in loosening them.
In Fig. 5 I have illustratedV my invention as used in the manufacture of round brushes. Instead of the flat head B, which I use in making flat brushes, I use a round head II, which, if desired, may be hollow both for lightness and convenience in attaching the handle thereto. Around the outside of the lower part of the head H is a laterally-extending projection or rib I, corresponding to the projection C. In connection with this head H, I use two semicircular clamps J, which are trough shaped in cross section and are clamped together upon the bristles by screws, holding them in the same Way as in the iat brush.
In order that the clamps should come together upon the bristles in proper relative position to each other, I preferably provide them one with ears or projections K and the other with corresponding recesses to receive them, so that at the ends of the brush, while the clamps are being brought together, the bristles are held from squeezing out endwise and also preventing such accidental loosening of the bristles in use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as novel and desire to secure by Letters Patentj 1. In a paint-brush, the combination with a head provided with a laterally-extending projection, .of a trough-shaped clamp, bristles bent over the projection of the head held in position by the clamp, and menus for holdrespectively, adapted to t each other, and 1o ing; the clamp against the bead, substantially means to hold the clam ps together, substana-s described. tinlly as described.
2. In a. paint-brush, the combination with 1n testimony whereof I ztfx my signature a head provided with laterally-extending proin presence of two Witnesses.
jections, of trough-like clamps, bristles bent JAMES E. MURPHY. over the laterally-extending projections held XVitnesses:
in place by the clamps, the said clamps being` T. HART ANDERSON,
provided at their ends with ears and recesses, HORACE VAN EVEREN.
