To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we,JULIAN R. HoLLEY and EDWARD O. FOWLER, citizens of the United States, residing at Bristol, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have in- Vented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Burners, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to improvements in lamp-burners; and the object of our improvement is to provide an improved support for the chimney-holding arms.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of our burner, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.

The burner proper may be of any ordinary construction. The burner-base 3is provided with upwardly-extended and resilient chimney holding arms 4, the general form of which is old; Near the middle of the length of these arms they are slit longitudinally and the parts by the side of said slits bent slightly to form eyes 5, as shown. These arms are then tied together by a non-expansible ring 6, which passes through the said eyes 5 of the arms 4:. The ring 6 when formed of wire has its ends firmly secured together, so as to make it practically the same as a solid ring. In the drawings we have shown the ends as covered for a short distance by a band 7, which assists in rigidly securing the ends of the wire. The ring although formed'of resilient wire is nonexpansible because its ends are firmly fastened and the wire will not stretch in an endwise direction.

We are aware that it is old to make eyes near the upper ends of chimney-holding arms similar to those herein shown and to reinforce said arms by an expansible ring or band, the same in some instances being expansible by means of a loop or other bend in the ring and in some instances by a spiral spring between the ends of the wire that forms the body of said ring. Our burner difiers from the foregoing in two essential particulars viz., first, we locate the ring below the upper end of the arms and about midway between the base and the extreme upper holding por tion at the end of the arms, whereas these prior burners have the ring located at the upper holding end of the arms, and, second,we tie thefarms together by a non-expansible band give them the rigidity of shorter arms, practically the same as if the length of the arms was only the portion which is above the ring. At the same time all of the arms may move bodily together slightly in a lateral direction when tied together by the ring to a greater extent than if the arms extended from a rigid base located where the ring is placed.

We claim as our invention- A lamp-burner having the resilient chimney-holding arms 4 extending upwardly from its base, and a non-expansible ring secured on said arms at a point about midway between their upper bearing ends and the said base,- substantially as described.
