UNITED STATFB PATENT OFFICE.
WASHBURN RAGE, OF SENECA FALLS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO L. S. BACON.
SELF-ACTING REGISTER FOR STOVES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 6,129, dated February 20, 1849.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVASHBURN RAGE, of Seneca Falls, in the county of Seneca and State of New York, have invented a new and improved stove registering apparatus to be operated upon and adjusted by the expansion and contraction of aportion of the stove itself; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, Figure 1 being a perspective view of my register complete, and Figs. 2, 3, and at representing in perspective and section the parts thereof in detail.
Similar letters indicate like parts, in all the figures.
a, is a flanch which is riveted or otherwise secured to one of the vertical plates 'of a stove, near its lower extremity; from the flanch a, there projects outward, at right angles with the stove plate, a rim surmounted by the disk A; from the upper edge of the flanch a, and its rim, there rises the se1nitube 6, cast in one piece therewith. From the center of the disk A, there projects the short tube 7), having a screw thread cut therein; 2, is a ledge projecting from the periphery of A; 6, Z) are ledges projecting from the face of A, on three sides of the openings 91-, a, through the same; the pro jecting edges of the tube 29, and the ledges Z), Z), and 2, are all in the same plane with each other.
B, is a vibrating lever, suspended by the fulcrum pin 1", passing through its upper end and inserted into the upper side of the disk A; s, s, s, are teeth projecting at right angles from the lower end of B.
C, is a hook on the upper end of B, close to the fulcrum pin 1". made fast to the lower end of the wooden rod D, and taking into the hook 0, on the lever, B.
J, is a cap, the rim of which embraces and is accurately fitted to the ledge 2, surrounding the disk A; from the upper edge of J, there rises the semi-tube m, which is fitted accurately to the semi-tube Z,- (rising from a, A;) the, two forming a tubular casing for the wooden rod D. The cap J, is confined to the disk A, by the screw 00, passing through the center of J, into the tube 79, the upper ends of the semi-tubes Z, m, are embraced, and confined to each other by the E, is a metallic hook,
stove as represented in Fig. 5. K is a me tallic screw, made fast to the upper end of D, and projecting through an aperture in the top of the cap F; G, is anut or knob working on the screw K. H is a revolving damper or register plate, located within the cap J, suspended by, and revolving on the blank portion of the screw, 00, the outer edge of the inner side of the damper bears against the ledge 2, rising from the disk A; notches are formed in the damper, corresponding in size and shape with the apertures 01, n, in A.
(Z, is an aperture in the damper close to its central bearing aperturefrom the inner edge of which, the teeth 25, t, radiate; the teeth t 25 pass between, and are operated upon by, the teeth 5, s, s, projecting from the lower end of the lever B.
The upper ends of the casings Z, m, pass up into the cap F, a distance sutficient to allow for the play therein, caused by the expansion of the stove plate. A series of apertures 3 y, are formed in the crown and sides of the cap J, for the air to enter to the openings, at, n, in the disk A; a suitable number of apertures are also formed in the stove plate under A, for the air entering through the apertures i 3 and n n, to pass to the chamber of combustion.
The operation of my improved stove register is as follows :it will readily be perceived that any tension exerted on the rod D, will vibrate the lever B, and impart to the damper H, a movement in one direction on its axis; and that when this tension upon the rod ceases, the prominences w, '22, on one side'of the damper will cause the same to revolve in an opposite direction; by means of the nut G, therefore, the damper can be set in any desired position.
Previous to kindling a fire in a stove, the damper is set in such a position as to bring the notches therein opposite, the apertures n, n-thereby giving the air free access, to the chamber of combustion; asthe stove plate becomes expanded by heat, the cap F, will be elevated thereby, and will carry with it the non-expansible rod D, causing the hook E, to vibrate the lever, B, which will impart motion to the damper, sufficient to partially close the apertures 72 n, and if the heat of the stove becomes too intense, the damper, Will be moved sufiicient to close the openings, n, n, and entirely out off the air from the fire chamber. WVhen the temperature of the stove diminishes, the consequent contraction of its plates, will remove all tension from the rod, D, and permit the heavy side of the damper to revolve the same on its axis, and again open the air apertures 11, n. It will therefore be seen that the damper H, can be so adjusted, by the nut G, that the expansion and contraction of a portion of the stove, will so act upon the damper, as to keep the stove at any temperature that may be desired ;--provided it be supplied with the requisite quantity of fuel.
Any number of openings may be made in the disk A, for the passage of air, and the shape of the damper H made to correspond therewith.
The rod D, described herein, and represented in the drawings, as being made of wood; may be made of any other material,
or combination of materials, that will render it sufliciently non-expansible.
lVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arranging and combining the re spective parts of my improved stove registering apparatus with each other and with a stove, in such a manner that the expansion and contraction of the stove itself (or the portion of it with which the registering apparatus is combined) shall operate the register or damper plate, and thereby regulate and govern the admission of air to the chamber of combustion; not intending by this claim to limit myself to any particular form of the respective parts of the registering apparatus, but to vary them as I may deem expedient, while I attain the same end by substantially the same means.
