Be it known that I, CHARLES A. J AOKSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Elkhorn, in the county of VValworth and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to signs designed to be used for advertising purposes; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully set forth hereinafter and subsequently claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a representation of one form of my device in elevation, partially broken away or in section to better illustrate certain details of construction.

Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view showing anupper part f of the rod E there is secured in any suitable manner, as by rivets g g, a plate or disk F, on both sides of which the advertisement is to be displayed.

In the form shown in Fig. 1 the cylindrical tube B is open at both ends and the lower vertical part of the rod E extends entirely therethrough and is preferably upset at the bottom, as shown at I), while in the form shown in Fig. 2 the bottom of the said tube B may be closed, (though this is immaterial,) and the lower part of the rod E, near its lower end, is provided with an annular exterior groove 0, and the cylindrical tube 13 is formed with transverse holes cl cl therethrough in line therewith, so that the prongs of the staple G i will extend through said holes and said groove into the support A. Both or only one of the staples O D may thus pass through holes in the tube 13 and corresponding groove or grooves in the rod E, as desired,

My device is intended to be placed on posts or other supports in fields or pastures, along roadways, or beside railroad-tracks, or, if desired, against barns and other buildings and to be so placed that the large plate or disk F will catch the force of the wind and be con tinually whirled around thereby, thus constantly exposing both sides of the said plate or disk and the advertisements displayed thereon to the attention of any one passing, thereby forming a very novel and efiective advertising device.

The object of upsetting the lower end of the rod E or grooving the said rod for engagement with the supporting-staples is to prevent the sign from being pulled away from its supporting-cylinder B by the force of the wind. The upper part f of the rodE may be flattened, if desired, in order to fit more closely to the disk or plate F.

One of the chief advantages of my device is that it can be moved or revolved in either direction with the wind, and as it will always be edgewise to the wind no matter from what direction the latter blows it escapes injury from severe storms, wherein itpossesses great advantages over revolving signs which turn continuously, as by clockwork or otherwise, independently of the wind and which are intended to always revolve in one direction. Hence my device is better adapted for outdoor advertising than signs of the character described. Again, by having the center of gravity of the plate which displays the advertisement at one sideof and some distance from the pivotal point the device is much less liable to become rickety and noisy from wear.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. An advertising device, comprising an an gularly bent rod, having upper and lower upright portions and an intermediate connecting portion, said lower portion being adapted for revoluble connection to a suitable support, and a'plate or disk secured to the upper portion of said rod, substantially as set forth. I

An advertising device, comprisingasupporting cylindrical tube, a bent rod having upper and lower vertical portions and an intermediate connecting portion,said lower ver tioal portion being rovolubly supported within said tube, a plate or disk secured to the upper vertical portion of the rod, and fastening devices for securing said tube to a suitable support, substantially as set forth.

3. An advertising device, comprising an angularly-bentcontinuous rod, having upper and lower upright portions and an intermediate connecting portion, said lower portion being adapted for revoluble connection to a suitable support, and a plate or disk secured to the upper portion of said rod, with the center of gravity of said plate or disk always at one side of and some little distance from the pivotal point of the said rod, substantially as set forth.

4. An advertising device comprisin g an angularly-bent continuous rod having upper and lower upright portions and an intermediate connecting portion, the upper portion of said rod being flattened on one surface, and the lower portion of said rod being cylindrical, a cylindrical tube for receiving and supporting the said lower port-ion of the rod, fastening devices for preventing the accidental withdrawal of the lower portion of the rod from the said tube, and a plate or disk secured against the flattened surface of the upper portion of the said rod, substantially as set forth.
