Description

1. TENNEY GATES, or 1 LM1TSBune,` NEW Your..
1 L'eeefslarentm. 61,188, dated Jamin@ 15,1867.
IMPROVEMENT 1N csnmeno'ors.
ith: destitute rrferrh tu im time tettrs ntnit uur mating ,um nf tigt sume,
Be it known that I, P. TENNEY GATES, of Plattsburg, in theiconnty of Clinton, und, State of NewYork, have invented a new and useful improved Selt`-Protecting Water-Proof Carriage Boot and I hereby declare that the following is o, full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the nrt to manufacture und-use the sinne, reference being lhed to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in whieh Figure 1 is a, perspective view of my improved carriage boot.
Figure 2 is a. side or sectional view of the sume.
Figure 3 is n sectional view pertaining to the seme.
Figure 4 is e, sectional view of thedn'side of the dash or dashy cover pertaining to the sume.
l Figure 1 is n perspective view ot' my improved selt`-p1oteeting water-'proof carriage boot, showing when i mnde'in combinzttion with a, dash coter, und applied to the dash.
Figure 2 is e. side or sectional view, (broken awuy,) showing the whip-setter F when pssed through an opening in the dash cover C, tig. 1, and being received intojthe whipl socket, letter G, iig. 2; also showing the fasteningsof the boot or dash cover at letter a, by loop being passed over the knob I and the under side of the dash. (Any other mode of fastening may be adopted.) A
Figure Sis a. sectional view of the boot itself, which may be made of' any. size. The drops, letter D, fig. 1 may be made of any form desired to suit the shapeof the vehicle upon which it is designed to be usedl At its lower sido, letters arca, will be seen the triangular shape thereof, when made in combination with the roofed portion of the boot, es shown in iig. 1, letters.
Figure -is afsectionel view of the dash cover, showing the arched or raised portion of the same; also the opening', letter C, through which the whip is passed by raising the flap.
Figure 5 is a front view of the dash cover, showing the straps d, by which the same can be fastened to the dash.
My invention has for its object to furnish a. very' desirable style of calrriuge boot, made of' such u shape that itwiuconduct the water to the guter sid@ ofthe vehicle,- andthus make the same self-nrotccting and waterproof. Itkmay be mede of enamelled. cloth, rubber, leather, or any other suitable material, and may be applied', to the dash, either stationary or otherwise, when mode of u roofed or arched shape at the bottom,'or by forming e shape or connection with the dash or cover, whereby en inclined pluue .shall be effected. Also to furnish an' arrangement whereby u 'whip muy be co'nvcniently carried by its being allowed to pass lthrough the dash cover' und be received infthe 'whip-socket. I um uw-arc that there has been made nu .ordinary style of carriage boot. with n pocket to throw over the dash,-but its arrangement is very inferior, und allows the water to settle in front of the carriage. But by my invention the vehicle is kept perfectly dry, und is provided with a. whipsocket am-angementthat een be used equally als well in rainy or muddy weather when the boot is used as at any other time.
`Hevingthus described my invention, what I claim es new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. The'boot A, constructed substnntiztlly es described, and used as and for the'purposes herein se; forth. l 2. The dash cover, provided 'with its flaps D und "strnps d, when constructed as set forth and used 3;.The combination of the dash cover C and boot A,when formed asiherein fully 'described and used with the-dushof a. vehicle, either stutionaryor adjustable, in the manner and for rthe objects described. v As evidence that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto-set my hundA in the presence of two witnesses,
. l l Witnesses: y i P' IENNEY GATES' H. WALWoRTn, 1H.l H. SHERMAN.
