Be it known that I, ARTHUR WILLIAM SAv- AGE, of Utica, in the county of Oneida, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Magazine-Firearms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

Figure 1 shows a longitudinal section of a magazine-firearm embodying my present improvements, excepting the bolt, which is shown in full. Fig. 2 shows portions of the firearm, including the bolt shown in section.

Referring to the reference letters and tigures in a more particular description, 1 indicates the barrel, which is screw-threaded into the frame 2 in the usual manner, and which frame is constructed to receive the stock 3. Under the barrel is provided a tip-stock 4. In the frame at the end of the barrel is provided a breech-opening 6, through which the arm is loaded and from which the empty shells are ejected. Beneath the breech-opening 6 is provided the magazine 7, adapted to contain the cartridges and containing the cartridge-carrier S. The bolt 9 is adapted to reciprocate backward and forward in the receiver and is provided with the breech-shoulder 10, adapted to engage with the corresponding shoulder on the frame 2 The bolt 9 is operated by the lever 11, having a curved arm, and the stud or projection 12 on the end of the arm operating in a cam-groove 13 in the wing portion of the rear end of the bolt 9. In its movement the rear end of the boit is dropped downwardly and retired into the space indicated by A when the breech is open.

The breech-bolt is hollow and receives the firing-pin 11, having a wing-like portion 14.a at its rear end, including also a projection 15, adapted to be caught on a projection at 16n on the scar 16.

On the forward end of the firing-pin 14 is provided a firing-pin tip 17, having a point adapted to be projected through an opening in the front end of the bolt for the purpose of exploding the primer in the shell. The chamber or recess in the tiring-pin also receives the iiring-spring 18, which is confined between the tip 17 and the bushing 19, closing the rear end of the opening in the breech-bolt, except a passage for the firing-pin 14. On the firingpin tip 17 are provided characters E and O, as shown in the drawings. When in the cocked position, the character C, as shown, is adapted io appear at the opening 2O in the breech-bolt and indicates that fact. When the arm has been fired, the position of the ring-pin and firing-pin tip is changed so that the other character E, as shown, appears at the opening 2O in the breech-bolt and indicates that the arm has been red or that it is not cocked. In closing the bolt from its retired position at A within the frame toward the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 the projection 15 on the side of the iringpin wing engages with the projection shown in dotted lines at 16d on the side of the sear 16, and the firing-pin is held back and the ring-spring 18 compressed while the bolt is completing the movement toward the position shown in Fig. 1. in the cocked position in Fig. 2. The arm is fired by operating the trigger 21, whichthrows the projection 16a out of engagement with the projection 15.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The breech-bolt provided with an opening, a firingpin provided with characters arranged to be exposed at the opening to indicate the position of the firing-pin combined, substantially as set forth.
