TOY PISTOL.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,260, dated February 1, 1881.

To all whom it may concern- Be it known that I, GEORGE W. EDDY, of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain 5 new and useful Improvements in Fire-Arms,

of which the following is a specification.

My improvements relate especially to toy pistols for firing blank cartridges, and are designed to lessen the danger of accidentally fir- [o in g the cartridges in the use of the pistols.

The improvements consist in the combination, in a fire-arm with a barrel and a hammer, of a breech-piece providedwith arms extending forward of the breech of the barrel 1 and secured to the barrel by means of pins or trunnions which enter elongated holes or slots, whereby provision is afforded for swinging said breechpiece out of line with the barrel forloadin g said barrel, or for forcing the breech 2o bodily forward by an impulse from the hammer for firing the fire-arm. The breech-piece preferably has a firing-pin rigidly affixed to it.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan or top view of a toy pistol or fire-arm 2 5 embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a side View of the same, and Fig. 3 is a side view thereof, with certain parts in section.

Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.

A designates the barrel of the pistol, here shown as cast with the stock and handle B, though, so far as my improvements are concerned, it may be hinged to the said stock and handle.

3 The hammer C, trigger D, and the mechanism for actuating the same may be of the ordinary or any other suitable form. There must however be such a relation between the rear or breech end of the barrel and the nose of the 4o hammer that the latter can never reach the former or, indeed, come into proximity with it.

E designates a breech-block or breech-piece, which, in its normal position, obtrudes itself between the rear or breech end of the barrel and the hammer, but which may be moved out of the way at pleasure. It must necessarily be moved out of line with the barrel to permit of the insertion of ammunition in the only permits of the swinging of the breech- 6o block, but also of its longitudinal movement, when in its normal position, under an impulse imparted to it by the hammer.

G designates a firing pin or device, which, in this example of my improvements, is rigidly 6: attached to and carried by the breech-block.

It projects from the inner face of the breech block and when the latter is moved forward by the hammer is forced against the cartridge and serves to explode it.

In lieu of the arms E being provided with slots they might be provided with pins or claws engaging with longitudinal grooves in the barrel.

By providing this device or breech-block, which has to be moved out of the way in order that the barrel may be loaded, and which needs to be returned to its normal position between the barrel and hammer before the pistol can be fired, I reduce, if not entirely obviate, the lia- 8o bility of accidental firing during the loading of the barrel.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, in a fire-arm with a barrel and a hammer, of a breech-piece provided with arms extending forward of the breech of the barrel, and secured to the bar rel by means of pins or trunnions which enter elongated holes or slots, whereby provis- 0 ion is afforded for swinging said breech-piece out of line with the barrel for loading said barrel, or for forcing said breech-piece bodily forward by an impulse from the hammer for firing the fire-arm, substantially as specified. 5

2. The combination, in a fire-arm with a barrel and a hammer, of a breech-piece provided with arms extending forward of the breech of the barrel and secured to the barrel by means of pins or trunnions which enter elongated holes or slots, and a firing-pin rigidly affixed to said breech-piece, whereby provision is afiorded for swinging said. breeehpiece out of line with the barrel for loading said barrel, or for forcing said breech-piece bodily forward by an impulse from the hammer for firing said fire-arm, substantially as specified.

3. The eornbin ation of the barrel A, the hammer O, the breech-piece E, with its arms E extending upon opposite sides of said barrel and provided with slots a, and trunnions or 15 pins 1) projecting from said barrel and entering said slots, substantially as specified.
