ADVERTISING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 611,045, dated September 20, 1898. Application filed July 12, 1897. Serial No. 644,349. (No model.) I
T0 @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. STOUT, of Anderson, county of Madison, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Advertising Device; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like figures refer to like parts.
My invention relatesto an advertising device to be used in store-windows or elsewhere, either as a mere attraction or as means for displaying advertising matter.
lVhile it is termed an advertising device, itis usefulforotherpurposes,at least has other incidental uses. For example, it would effectually keep flies away from the store-window with which it is connected or mirror or other object or surface which may be desired to be kept free from the flies.
The full nature of my invention will appear from the accompanying drawings and the description and claims following.
In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation of my invention or device combined with a window, the latter being broken away. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, the window being in crosssection.
In detail,ll is a`window, and 2 the side frames thereof. To each side frame I secure a bracket 3, having integral therewith the bearing 4, in
which I mount on one side an idle-pulley 5 and on the other side a driving-pulley 6, in a vertical position. The pulleys rotate with their axes in a vertical position and are flan ged at the edges, so as to carry the belt 7 horizontal. While the belt should preferably be carried horizontal, the device will be effective 'if it be set somewhat at an angle or inclination merchandise to which it may be desired to attract attention. It is observed that the ribbons while carried around by the belt will for a store-window.
assume an inclined position, substantially as shown, the angle of inclination being greater pr less, according to the rapidity of the movement of the belt. The ribbons, therefore, that are suspended from one side of the belt would be inclined in one direction and those on the other side in an opposite direction, as shown. These ribbons in their circuit-ous movement will interfere with each other irregularly. When ribbons of varied colors are used, the appearance of the Whole number of ribbons moving in two series in opposite directions with the inclination of them caused by the movement of the belt and their irregular interference with each other is kaleidoscopic and furnishes a unique and novel attraction Thev advertising feature can be enhanced by printing any suitable words, pictures, or designs upon the ribbons or strips used. In carrying out the invention for this purpose other depending things may be substituted for the ribbons, as the fancy of the advertiser may suggest. articles of merchandise of various colors and shapes or elastic ribbons with figures of animals or amusing objects secured to them at the lower ends or elsewhere, or business-cards of various designs, forms, and colors may be suspended and carried about by the belt.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. An advertising device including a pair of pulleys arranged with their axes in a vertical position, a belt carried on said pulleys in substantially a horizontal position, means for driving the same, andribbons or Ystrips suspended at intervals from the belt with their lower ends free.
2. An advertisingdeviceincludingbrackets adaptedv to be secured at each side of a suitable frame, pulleys mounted in said brackets with their axes in a vertical position, means for driving one of said pulleys, a belt mounted on said pulleys in a substantially horizontal position, and ribbons or strips suspended at intervals from the belt with their lower ends free.
,Y In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of June, 1897.
GEORGE A. STOUT.
V. H. LooKWooD, ZULA GREEN.
