SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 610,888, dated September 20, 1898.

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES H. BOWIE, a citizen of the United States,residing at Lisbon Falls, in the county of Androscoggin and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scaffold-Hangers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to a hanger or support for scaffolds and the like, my object being to provide a hanger by which a scaffold can be held securelyat any desired angle, and which can be readily adjusted and compactly folded for transportation. To these ends the invention consists in the various matters hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, Figure 1 is an end View of ascaifold, showing one of the present hangers attached thereto; and Fig. 2 is adetail of the side arms of the hanger. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views of the sliding connections of the side arms.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, A represents the ropes and the usual block and hook by which the scaffold is supported, B the scaffold, and O my pres ent hanger. This hanger comprisesa ring 1, upon which are loosely hung the inclined side arms 2, provided at their lower ends With vertical extensions and with terminal oppositely-disposed hooks 3, the extremities of which are bent back substantially parallel to the vertical extensions of the side arms. The scaffold, provided with a platform B and with side rails set ed gewise and depending below the platform, is set within the hanger in a manner to cause the side rails to be supported within the hooks and to cause the platform to rest upon the hook extremities. By reason of this construction the scaffold is socurely retained, and the platform as well as the rails are directly supported upon the hooks, and adjustment of the scaffold with respect to the hanger is permitted by reason of the fact that the vertical extensions upon the lower ends of the side arms remove the latter from contact and interference with the scaffold-rails.

In order to make the hanger adjustable to scaffolds of varying widths and to provide means for adjusting the lateral inclination of the latter, the side arms are preferably composed of two members 4 and 5, longitudinally adjustable with respect to each other. Each of these members is provided with a slot 6, said slot being preferably closed, as at 7, at the free end of the members, and bolts 8 proj ecting from these solid portions 7. The bolts of one member project through the slot in the corresponding member of an arm and have upon their projecting ends a nut 9-, by Which the two members of an arm are normally clamped together and held in position. Preferably the free ends of the bolts 8 are headed, as at 10, so that the nuts 9 cannot become detached therefrom and lost.

A hook 11 is provided upon one of the arms, under which hook the free portion of the fallrope a is adapted to be caught, the fall-rope being then secured to the hook in the block supported by the ropes A in the usual manner.

Preferably, as here shown one of the members of each of the arms 2 is roughened on its outer face, as at 12, while the bolt upon the other member is provided with a washer 13, having its inner face roughened to mesh with the roughened surface upon the arm. Thus when the nut upon the bolt is screwed tightly against the washer there is no possi bility of the members 4 and 5 slipping upon one another.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a scaffold-hanger, the combination with a platform having depending side rails, of inclined supporting-arms therefor, comprising slotted sections slidable upon each other, each section carrying a threaded pin which extends through the slot of the adjacent section and receives a clamping-nut, the lower sections having vertical hooks formed on their inner sides to engage the side rails of the platform, and a ring connecting the upper sections, substantially as described.
