SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 610,741, dated September 13, 1898. Application tiled May 5, 1898. Serial No. 679,7701 (No model.)

Be it known that I, EDWARD HAHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Devices for Forming Tufted Upholstering, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of upholsteringdevices, and has particular relation to the production of tufted work in upholstering.
The objects of my invention are to provide an improved mold or form of superior construction and arrangement of parts for the production of tufted upholstering and to produce other improvements in details of construction and arrangement of parts, which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter.
These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in
which- Figure l is a plan view of a portion of my improved tufting mold or board. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line of Fig. l, showing the upholstering material in connection with said mold; and Fig. 3 is a detail view in perspective of one of the tuft-forming projections.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In carrying out my invention I employ a suitably-supported base-board l, upon which is mounted any desirable number and relative arrangement of tutt-producing projections or molds 2. As indicated in the drawings, the molds 2 are each formed with oblong base portions, the sides and ends of each of said tutt-molds being inclined or made to flare outwardly and downwardly from the upper iiattened end thereof and said sides and ends being curved or concaved, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3. through the medium of screws 3, which pass through the base-board 1 and enter the bodies of said tuft-molds, detachably and adjustably secured upon said base-board and in such relative arrangement as may be desired.
Upon the upper side of the base-board 1 and about the group or series of mold projections 2 I provide a raised bead or frame 4. In the upper iiattened and preferably circusimilar adhesive material.

I n utilizing my invention for the purpose of producing tufted upholstering the moldingboard, formed as above described, has laid thereon and over the mold projections 2 a piece of leather or other material 6, which is to form the cover of the upholstered body. This leather strip or piece 6 being rst depressed between the mold projections 2 and against the sides and ends of the latter is held in this position by means of slotted disks 7, which are forced down over the projecting staples 5, together' with the goods embraced thereby,` after which the pins 8 are inserted between said disks and the upper ends of said staples. The goods to form the cover being thus pinned upon the mold projections and the outer portion of said cover material being pressed against the inner sides of the frame-bead 4, over which the goods is allowed to project, as shown in Fig. 2, the filling material 9 is then introduced into the spaces between the mold projections 2 and between the latter and the bead 4. This being properly accomplished, the pins 8 are withdrawn and the disks 7l removed from the mold projections, after which the cover goods which rest upon the upper ends of said mold projections is subjected to a coating of glue or A strip of burlap or other suitable backing material 10 is now laid over the tops of the mold projections and surrounding bead 4 and the disks 7 and pins 8 again secured in, their positions on the tops of said mold projections, thus insuring a clamping of the burlap against the glued portions of the cover-strip 6. This contact of said backing-strip and coverstrip may be continued until the glue or other adhesive material has set, after which the pins and disks may be removed and the partially-completed upholstered body removed from the moldboard and finished in the usual manner.
From the construction and operation which I have described it will be seen that simple and effective means are provided for producing upholstered work in which the tufts will be uniform in size aud arrangement. It will also be seen that the production of a piece of tufted work by my device may be accomplished in a rapid and inexpensive manner.
Owing to the fact that both the mold projections 2 and the pieces forming the surrounding bead 4 are detachably connected with the board 1 said projections and bead may be arranged in desirable relative positions on said board and may be so distributed thereon as to produce different or desirable patterns of Work.
