UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN PRESTON HALSTEAD, OF SGRANTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
DIE FOR MAKING BUTTONS AND OTHER ARTICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 343,309, dated June 8, 1886.
7 Application filed September 1, 1885. Serial No. 175,918. (No model.)
for Making Buttons and other Articles, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar lettersof reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a face View ofa part of one ofthe dies. Fig. 2 is a face view of a part of the other die. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of a portion of the dies and their back plate.
The object of this invention is to provide dies made in such a manner that tinsel spots can be imprinted in the bodies of buttons,
dominos, and other a1 ticles formed of a plastic material while the said articles are being pressed into shape in the dies, and which .shall be convenient in use and reliable in op-' the face of which are formed recesses B, to re ceive and give shape to material for the said back parts of the said articles.
0 represents the die that forms the front parts of the buttons or other articles, and in the face of which are formed recesses l), to receive and give shape to the material for the front parts of the said articles.
The dies A O are centered upon each other by pins E, attached to the die 0, and which enter holes F in the die A.
In the dies A 0, between the recessesB D, are formed recesses G, to receive the surplus material after the said recesses B D have been filled.
In the die A, in the middle parts of the re- I cesses B, are formed one or more holes, H, and in the die 0, in the middle parts of the recesses D, are formed one or moreholes, I, registering with the holes H. The holes I H are designed to receive two pins, J, attached to the back plate, K, to form eyes in the buttons.
In the die 0, in the places where it is designed to have tinsel spots in the buttons or other articles, are formed perforations L to receive pins M, attached to the back plate, K, and which are of such a length as to project into the recesses D, as far as it is desired to have the tinsel spots sunk in the said articles.
In using the dies strips or pieces of the plas- I tic material are laid over the recesses Bin the die A, the die 0 and the back plate, K, are placed upon the die A, and sufficient pressure is applied,by a press or other suitable means, to force the material into every part of the recesses B D. The back plate, K, is then lifted off, and a small quantity of tinsel or other glitt-ering substance, having a different color from the body of thearticle,is placed in each perforation L. The back plate, K,is then replaced, and the (lies are again subjected to pressure, which causes the pins M to force the tinsel into the bodies of the articles being formed, where it will be so firmly embedded as to remain permanently in place.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In dies for making buttons and other articles, the combination, with the die 0, having recesses D and perforations L, and the back plate, K, of the pins M, attached to the said back plate, K, and fitting into the said perforations L of the die 0, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby permanent spots of tinsel or other material can be formed in the articles pressed in the said dies, as set
