JEREMIAH A. SCRIVEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
GARlVi ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 610,564, dated September 13, 1898.
Application filed January 5, 1898. Serial No. 665,689. (No model.) j
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEREMIAH A. SCRIVEN, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to garments, and has for its object to improve the construction of the tubular extremities thereof.
To this end my invention consists in the construction hereinafter set forth and claimed.
My invention will be understood by referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an elevation of the Afeet and lower limbs of a person wearing my improved garment. Fig. 2'shows one of the tubular extremities of the garment turned inside out. Fig. 3 shows a modified form thereof.
The improvement, as before stated, is mainly directed to the tubular extremities of the garment, which are shown in Fig. l as comprised of inelastic tubes a, terminating in one or more inelastic gores b.
c is an integral tubular elastic portion of the proper size to be fitted to the extremity of the tubular inelastic portion c. By referring to Fig. 2 it will be noted that this tubular elastic portion is tapered and is secured to the extremity of the tubular inelastic portion by rows of stitches d, bounding the edges of the gores b, and may be likewise stitched by a row of stitches e at the head of the gores. By thus constructing the garment extremities there will be left between the gores and their adjacent portions spaces f,which are lled by the elastic tubular portion, so that the garment may stretch at these places and thereby accommodate itself to the shape of the limb of the wearer.
In Fig. 3 it will be noted that I have shown a number' of gores b secured by their edges to the elastic tubular portion c. I have herein used the term inelastic in the sense of less elastic than the elastic portion. I do not, however, mean by said term to imply that the portions so described as inelastic should actually be absolutely inelastic, but simply that they shall be less elastic than the elastic tube, which is usually made of rib-knitted fabric.
What I claim is- The improvement in garments comprising a garment having tubular members provided with one or more gores at the extremities thereof, spaces adjacent to the said gores and an elastic tubular member secured to the said gored extremity along the edges of the gores and covering the said gore or gores and filling the space or spaces adjacent to said gores.
