Description

No. 609,865. Patented Au 30, I898. H. WOODMANSE.
'TIGI-ITENEB FOR BBADE RODS.
(Application filed my 19, 1898.)
(No Model.)
NITED STATES HARRISON WOODMANSE,
ATENT Fries.
on FREEPORT, ILLINoIs.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,865, dated August 30, 1898.
Application filed May 19, 1898. Serial No. 681,165. (No model.)
T0 or whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRISON WooDMANsE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tighteners for Brace- -Rods,of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is toprovide means for tightening diagonal braeesas, for instance, the cross-braces in windmill-towers, to which this invention particularly applies.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of this tightener in position upon the diagonal braces of a Windmilltower. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the principal member of the tightener-clamp, showing the position which the brace-rods occupy therein. Fig. 8 is a face view of the same 3 and Fig. at is a longitudinal central section thereof on dotted line 00 50, Fig. 1.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
A are the vertical members'of a windmilltower.
B are cross-bars extending between and secured rigidly to the vertical members A.
G are the diagonal brace-rods of the tower.
D is the principal member of the tightenerclamp. It is provided with the raised portions D and D at either side thereof and the like projection D near one end of the said member D. It also has the central opening D for receiving the clamping-bolt, the serrations D and the extending wire loop D formed by placing the said loop in the mold and pouring the fluid metal which is to form the member D around the ends of said loop.
E is the upper clamping member, of circular form, having the impinging edges E for bearing upon the brace-rods (J when the clamp is in operative position.
F is the clamping-bolt, which firmly binds together the members D and E.
G is a bolt extending through the loop D for holding the latter firmly in contact with the cross-bar B. In application the member D of this tightener is placed on the brace rods 0 at their point of crossing in the manner shownin Fig. 2. The upper member E is put in position and the clamping-bolt F inserted through the openings provided to receive it. The bolt G is put through the loop D and the whole tightener drawn or driven downward until the brace-rods O are bent sufficiently from a straight line to make them taut. The bolt G is then drawn tight upon the loop D, and the membersD and E of the tightener are clamped firmly together by the bolt F.
Should the brace-rods C at any time become loose, the bolts F and G may be loosened and the rods tightened, as before.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a tightener for brace-rods, in combination, a clamp comprising two disklike members, means for holding the members together and a projection extending from one of the members for securing the clamp to the framework, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a tightener for brace-rods, in combination, a clamp comprising two disk -like members, one of said members having a pro jeetion for the reception of the brace-rods and a serrated surface for preventing the slipping of the clamp with relation to the rods, a bolt for holding the members together .and a projection from one of the said members for securing the clamp to the framework, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a tightener for brace-rods, in combi-- nation, a clamp comprising two members, one of said members having a projection providing for the reception of the brace-rods and a serrated portion for preventing the slipping of the clamp with relation to the rods, means for holding the members together and a loop extending from one of the members of the clamp for securing the latter to the framework, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4c. In a tightenerfor brace-rods, in combination, a clamp comprising two members, one of said members having three projections providing for the reception of the brace-rods and a serrated portion for preventing the slipping of the clamp with relation to the rods and means for holding the members together, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
5. In a tightener for brace-rods, in combination, a clamp comprising two members, one of said members having three projections providing for the reception of the brace-rods and the clamp for securing the latter to the framea serrated portion for preventing the slipping work, substantially as and for the purpose of the clamp with relation to the rods, the specified.
other one of said members having an edge HARRISON WOODMANSE. 5 adapted to impinge upon one of the rods, WVitnesses:
means forholding the members together and a THEO. D. HEWITT,
100p extending from one of the members of V. H. BLOSSER.
