VEHICLE-SPINDLE.
SPECIFICATON forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,501, dated. August. 23, 1898. Application filed December 20,1897. Serial No. 662,646. (No modell) To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, R-Usn: D. CRITGHFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coffeyville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Kansas, have invented a new and usey ful Vehicle-Spindle, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to vehicle-spindles.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient improvements in l device adapted to be readily applied to the ordinary spindle to take up the wear and avoid trimming and otherwise altering said spindle and capable of being readily renewed when worn out.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device adapted to be applied to old and worn spindles and axle-boxes to take up the wear and cause the Wheels to run true.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed vout in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure lis a longitudinal sectional view of a spindle and axle-box provided With a device constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the removable bushing.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
l designates a spindle provided at its inner end with the ordinary enlargement or collar 2, forming a shoulder, against which abuts a iiange 6 of a removable bushing 51. The removable bushing 5a, which is adapted to rotate on the collar or enlargement 2, fits against the bearing-face and the shoulder thereof and is adapted to receive the wear, and thereby protect the spindle. The bushing, which may be constructed of brass or any other suitable material, is readily removed when 'worn and can be conveniently replaced by a new one,
and it is designed to obviatethe necessity of frequently trimming or otherwise altering the axle to take up the wear. The'bushing is Idetachably secured Within the inner end of an 5o axle-box 8 and rotates with the same, the axle-box being provided at its innerrend with opposite grooves 9, which receive corresponding ribs or lugs l0 of the bushing. The ribs or lugs 10which are formed `integral with the bushing, are arranged on the upper face of the same at diametrically opposite points and'detachably interlock the bushing with the axle-box.
In applying the bushing 5:L to old vehicles the spindles are trued and the axle-boxes are cut to form grooves for the reception of the lugs or projections. If a bushing has become worn, it can be readily removed from its axlebox and a new bushing can be supplied.
The invention has the following advantages The bushing, which is adapted to bear against the end and face of the collar or enlargement at the inner end of the spindle, receives the wear and `may be readily removed when worn, and they obviate the necessity of cutting down an axle or otherwise altering the same to take up the wear.
The combination with a spindle provided at its inner end with an enlargement, of an axlebox provided at its inner end with opposite goooves, and a bushing arranged on the enlargement of the spindle and provided with a iange fitting against the shoulder thereof, said bushing having ribs or lugs` iitting in the grooves of the axle-box, whereby the bushing is detachably interlocked with the axle-box, and is caused to rotate with the same, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses. y
RUSH D. ORITCHFIELD.
