SELF-OILING WHEEL;
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 602,379, dated April 12,1898.
Application filed December s, 1897. serial No. 660,695. ou) model.)
To @ZZ whom t mafyconcern:
Be it known that we, IVOR BEES TITUS and J oHN WALToN ENsIGN, of Huntington, in the county of Cabell and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Self-Oiling Vheels, of which the following is a specification.
The invention is an improvement in the class of Wheels commonly known as self-oil-v ing wheels, and has for an object to providev a Wheel-hub adapted to hold a quantity of oil in such manner as to supply it to the bearing in sufficient quantity to properlylubricate the journal in the most economical manner.
It has for further objects to provide means by which to exclude dust from the journal and to provide at a convenient point means by which to supply the oil without the removal of plugs and other devices colnmonly used for that purpose.
The invention has 'for further objects other improvements; and it consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal section of the wheel in place on a spindle. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on about line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on about line 3 3 of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a cross-section on about line 4 4 of Fig. l, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the check-blocks.
The wheel Ahas its hub formed with a journal-tube B and with a shell C, an annular intermediate oil-space D being formed between them. At the inner end of the hub the shell C and tube B are connected by lugs E, spaced apart, forming ports or openings F, leading from the bearing to the oil-space near the inner end of the spindle G. The tube B is provided in advance of the ports F with an oilarresting ledge or shoulder F2, as best shown in Fig. l. The tube and shell are connected near the inner end of the hub by arms C', the inner tube being extended beyond the arms C, so the oil will not fall back into the openings F in large quantities and run to waste at the back end of the journal. The shell is extended inwardly beyond the journal-tube, with its inner end in alinement with said tube,
and is contracted between said end and the arms C', forming a contracted annular passage which leads to the openings or ports F, such passage being further contracted by the annular rib F2, which operates as a guard and keeps back the bulk of the oil,a nd yet allows sufficient to pass to lubricate the axle-collar.
Openings b are provided in the tube B, leading directly to the journal, for the direct passage of the oil to thespin'dle. Y
At the front end of the hub openings H are provided, leading outward i'nto the space within the tubular extension or nipple I of the shell. The cap J is fitted to this extension I, is shouldered at K, and fitted into a rabbet L, a suitable packing being supplied at such point, and the cap is held by the set-screws M or in other suitable manner. This cap J closes the outer end of the hub, has an opening J to permit the oil to be supplied at will, and operates at its inner end to hold the checkblocks N inV place. These blocks have wings N', fitting in the-groove G of the spindle G, and wings G2, which overlap 'the end of the spindle, the cap fitting at its inner end over the check-blocks and holding the same yseln operation ythe journal wint@ lubricatedA thoroughlyits entire lengthwith less oil than is ordinarily required, the wheel will be securely held and a better surface than the ordinary cotters will befurnished to receive the wear on the end of the hub, the check-blocks will be positively secu red by means of the cap, the wheel can be quickly removed and replaced in the case of repairs or when otherwise desired, and the whole is accomplished in a simple and effective manner.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isy l. The combination of the spindle, the wheel, the check-blocks engaging the spindle IOO and abutting at their ends and having in their outer sides at such ends recesses, the recesses in the meeting ends of the adjacent blocks uniting in forming ports for the oil substantially as shown and described.
2. The improvement herein described comprising the spindle, the series of blocks engaging the spindle, abutting at their ends and having at their ends recesses forming ports for the oil, and means for securing the blocks in engagement with the spindle substantially as set forth.
3. A Wheel having its hub formed with a shell and a journal-tube providing an intermediate oil-receptacie, the shell being extended inwardly beyond the journal-tube, spaced lugs connecting such inner extension of the shell with the inner end of the journal-tube and outwardly-extending arms in the oil-receptacle in advance of the said spaced lugs substantially as set forth.
4. The combination of the spindle having a groove the Wheel, the check-blocks having each a Win g tting in the groove of the spindle and a Wing Which overlaps the end of the spindle and the cap overlappin g such blocks at its inner end and secured to the wheel whereby to hold the blocks in place substantially as set`forth.
5. A Wheel having a journal-tube and a shell the latter being extended at its inner end beyond the inner end of the journal-tube and contracted in advance of said end forming a contracted passage, the spaced lugs connecting the ends of the shell and j ournal-tube at the inner end of said contracted passage, and the rib in advance of said lugs and operating as a guard whereby to limit the passage of oil to the openings or ports between the spaced lugs substantially as set forth.
