SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 241,223, dated May 10, 1881.
Application filed March 14, 1881. (ModcL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN H. KELLER and EDMOND M. KELLER, of Clyde, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Axles; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompan ying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement in wagon-axles, the object being to provide sim ple and efficient means for readily renewing axles that have become impaired by undue wear. With these ends in view our invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will hereinafter be explained, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is aview,in side elevation, of an axle-spindle provided with a supplemental collar. Fig. 2 is a view,in side elevation, of the axle-box provided with a collar attached to the outer end'thereof. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the axle spindle and box. Fig. 4 is a view of the axle-collar. Fig. 5 is a detached view of the axle-box collar. Fig. 6 shows a reanier for reaming out the axle-box. Fig. 7 shows a cutter for trimming off the end of the axle-box, and Fig. 8 shows a cutter for trimming down the axle-box and axle-spindle to enable the collars to be applied thereto.
A represents an axle-spindle which has become worn by long use, so that the axle-box fails to fit snugly thereon. To insure a snug fit between the axle-box and spindle, the latter is first trimmed down at its rear end, a, perfectly true and cylindrical, by means of the cutter M, which latter is furnished'with internal cutters, M, and face-cutters m. By rotating the cutterM upon the rear end of the axle-spindle snugly thereon.
the latter will be made perfectly true and cylindrical, and also the face m of the collar m will be cut down perfectly flat and true. Upon the rear end of the axle-spindle is then secured the tapering collar B, the flange I) of which fits snugly against the collar m on the rear end of the axle-spindle. The rear end of the axle-box is accurately fitted upon the tapering collar B ,by means ofthe conical or tapering reamer N.
As the axle and axle-box are also subjected to end wear, the axle-box is lengthened by the application of the collar 0, which is accomplished as follows: The outer surface of the axle-box is trimmed down by the cutter M, so that the inner end of the collar 0 will fit Then the cutter O is inserted in the end of the axle-box, and by rotating the cutter the outer end of the box is cut oftsquare. The collar bis then applied to the axle-box and secured by shrinking in place, or in any other desired manner.
Thus it will be observed that with a slight outlay an old and worn axle spindle and box may be readily refitted and transformed into a practically new and snug-fitting axle-spindle and aide-box.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
-1. An axle-box having a collar rigidly secured to its outer end, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a worn axle provided with a supplemental collar on its rear end, of an axle-box fitted upon said collar, and provided with a collar on its outer end, substantially as set forth.
