.SASH FASTENER.
(Applic ation filed Feb. 28, 1898..)

. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT GRIFFITH, OF ELIZABETH, PENNSYLVANIA.
SASH-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,428, dated August 23, 1898. Application filed February 28,1898. Serial in. 672,061. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT GRIFFITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Sash Support and Look; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
My invention has relation to a combined sash support and lock.
The object of the invention is to provide means for locking the sash so that it cannot be opened from without and which will subserve the additional function of lockin g the sash in any desired adjustment.
WVith this object in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the stiles of a windowframe and sliding sash, illustrating the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the latch, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of a portion of the windowframe bead.
In said drawings, 1 denotes the stile of the window-frame, and 2 the stile of the sash, which has a sliding engagement in the window-frame. 1
3 denotes the bead that holds the sash in the frame, and i denotes the latch. The
bead is secured to the side of the windowoted so as to have a slight wabbling move ment in and out, for a purpose hereinafter explained. g
In the position shown in Fig. 1 the latch, owing to its weightedend, is held by gravity, with its toe underneath the stop-shoulder of the bead. In this position it will be impossible for a person from without to raise the window.
Now when it is desired by the occupant of the house to raise the sash the toe of the latch is disengaged from the stop-shoulder and the sash elevated. In the upward movement of the sash it is evident that the toe of the latch will ride in and out of the notches or seats as the sash is ascending. qNow when the sash has been raised to the desired point it is re leased and supported by the toe of the latch, which'will be in engagement with one of the seats or notches.
When it is desired to lower the sash, it is first given a slight upward movement to release the toe of the latch from the notch with which it is engaged and to bring the toe at the upper end of the switch-rib, which is at the side of the notch or seat from which the toe has just been removed. The toe now engaging this rib will be guided outwardly and allow the sash to be loweredwithout the toe again engaging the seats or notches. It is held outwardly by coming into contact with the successive switch-ribs of the notches or seats.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the inven tion will be readily understood without requiring an extended explanation.
The device permits of quick adjustment and when the sash is closed automatically looks it from being opened by any person from without.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat-= ent,isp p As a new article of manufacture, a window sash support, consisting of a head 3 formed with a series of retaining-notches at, integral switch-ribs 5, having their upper ends curved inwardly and terminating at the edge of the bottom of each contiguous notch, an integrallongitudinal bevel-track 6 extending the entire length of said series of notches, an integral stop-shoulder 7 projecting at its lower end beyond the notched face of the said head, and the weighted latch 4 pivoted to the sash and movable laterally on its pivot, substan- 1o tially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT GRIFFITH.
