MATCH HULDER.

ATnN'r I MATCH-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,404, dated August 23, 1898. Application filed June 7, 1898. Serial Nc. 682,835. (No model.)
following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in y match-holders, the object of the invention being to provide a device that will be simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, and which will be very convenient when in use.
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a view in perspective. Fig. 2 is a View in vertical section, and Fig. 3 is a view at right angles to Fig. 2.
A represents a base-plate, preferably oval in shape and dished to form a tray for the reception of burned match-stems and ashes that may be thrown thereon. The base-plate or tray may be provided, as shown in the drawings, with concentric flanges 1 l to receive a ring of soft material a between themv to prevent scratching or noise when said holder is moved. However, I do not wish to limit my.
self to this specific construction to prevent scratching or noise, as I may use any approved form of cushion or I may use none at all, as the case may be.
A hollow block or enlargement 2 is provided in the upper face of the base-plate or tray at its center and is made or cast integral therewith. A rectangular frame 3 is disposed around said block or enlargement and secured to the base or enlargement in any approved manner. I have shown in the drawings holes 6 in the base, through which rivets 5, integral with the frame 3, are adapted to pass and be upset on their lower ends. I-Iowever, I might secure the frame to the enlargement or block by means of rivets or screws or other approved way, or I might employ screws 5o or bolts in securing the frame to the base, the said screws or bolts or rivets passing through the base and engaging the frame 3, or they may pass `throu gh the base of the frame 3 and through or into the block 2.
Two parallel uprights B B, preferably integral with the frame 3,-are disposed on diam'etrically opposite sides of the block or enlargement and are provided with inwardly projecting flanges 4; to prevent the escape of 6o a box placed on the block or enlargement and between said uprights.
It will be seen from the above description that my device is composed of but two parts,
and hence is very simple and cheap to manuat respective sides of said extension and pro- 8o jecting above the same, a frame made integral with and connecting the uprights and fastening devices 'passing through the base from the lower ends of said frame, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM BERNARD.
