LAMP-CHIMNEY HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,399, dated August 23, 1898;

Application filed December 24, 1397. Serial No. 663,317. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALBERT C. ALTHOUSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pineville,in the county of Bucks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and. useful Lamp-Chimney Holder, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to means for securing lamp-chimneys to the burners of coal-oil and other lamps, so as to enable the chimney to be held elevated while trimming the wick or lighting the lamp, and which means will prevent the casting of shadows or otherwise interrupt the luminous rays.

For a full understanding of the merits and advantages of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings and the following description.

The improvement is susceptible of various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and to a full disclosure of the invention an adaptation thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a view in elevation of a lampburner having the invention applied, the dotted lines showing the chimney supported at a distance above the burner, so as to admit of trimming the wick and lighting the lamp. The burner 1 may be of any of the varieties used in connection with oil or other lamps using a chimney to protect and intensify the light. The means for retaining the chimney 2 in place consist of spring-supports 3 and holders or bars 4. These spring-supports may be provided in any desired number, usually three being sufficient, and are disposed equidistant about the burner. Each spring-support is provided with a holder or bar 4, which is detachably fitted-thereto, so as to be readily replaced when broken.

their ends, and these vertical extensions have side flanges to prevent lateral displacement of the holders or bars 4. Spring-catches 9 are located at the sides of each plate 7, intermediate of the vertical extensions 8, and are adapted to spring into depressions 10, formed in the sides of the holders or bars 4 at their lower ends, thereby preventing accidental displacement of the said holders.

The holders or bars 4 are constructed of glass, which is thoroughly annealed, or may be formed of any transparent material, so as not to obstruct the rays of light. These holders or bars curve slightly throughout their length and converge at their upper ends, so as to admit of the chimney 2 being placed in position without requiring the upper ends of the holders to be pressed together. The lower end of each baror holder is reduced at its outer edge to receive the vertical extensions 8 to admit of them coming flush with the sides, whereby no obstruction is oifered to the chimney when slipping the latter into position from above. The depressions 10, into which the spring-catches 9 snap, may be formed in any manner desired and are provided by grooving the sides of the parts 4 transversely.

When placing a chimney in position upon a burner equipped with the invention as herein set forth, it is only necessary'to apply the chimney so that the converging ends of the holders or bars 4 will enter the lower end of the said chimney, after which the latter is pushed down upon the holders until limited in its descent by the gallerya For trimming or lighting the lamp the chimney is elevated the required distance and will be retained in place by the outward tendency of the holders or bars 4 due to the action of the spring-supports 3, whereby the frictional engagement between the holders andchimney will be suflicient to hold the latter elevated until lowered by the application of sufficient force thereto. The parts are disposed so that under normal conroe ditions the holders exert a slight outward pressureagainst the inner side of the chimney sufficient to retain it in place should the lamp be tilted or handled roughly. The outward pressure exerted by the spring-supports 3 is sufficient when the chimney is raised for trimming or lighting to retain the same elevated until lowered by the application of properly-directed force or pressure.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. The combination with aburner, of means for retaining a chimney in place, consisting of spring-supports, and holders or bars detachably connected therewith, substantially as set forth. 1

2. The combination with a burner, of means for retaining a chimney in place, consisting of spring-supports, and transparent holders or bars applied to the spring-supports, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination with a burner, and spring-supports applied thereto, of glass holders or bars thoroughly annealed and detachably fitted to the spring-supports, substantially as set forth.

4. The combination with a burner, of means for securing a chimney in place, consisting of spring-supports having their lower ends bent and secured to the burner, and holders or bars applied to the upright arms of the spring-supports, substantially as specified.

5. The combination with a burner,of springsupports, plates at the upper ends of the spring-supports, vertical extensions at the ends of the plates and having their edge portions extending inwardly toward one another,

and holders or bars having their lower ends fitted into the spaces formed by the said vertical extensions and the inwardly-projecting edges thereof, substantially as described.

6. The combination with a burner, of upright arms applied to the burner, springcatches having connection with the arms, and holders or bars detachably connected with the said arms by means of the spring-catches, substantially as set forth.

7. The combination with a burner, of upright arms secured thereto, spring-catches applied to the upper ends of the said arms, and holders or bars having depressions in their sides to receive the spring-catches by means of which the said holders have detachable connection with the aforesaid arms, substantially as specified.

8. The combination with aburner,of springsupports comprising upright arms having their end portions bent, the lower ends being secured to the burner, plates secured to the upper bent ends and having vertical extensions at their extremities and spring-catches at their sides intermediate of the vertical extensions, and transparent holders orbars having depressions in their sides to receive the spring-catches, and having their upper ends converging, substantially as shown for the purpose specified.
