Be it-known that I, CHARLIE ELMER YEA- GER,'of Prairie Creek, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Beds,of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in folding beds, being in the nature of a combined bed and bureau or other like article'of furniture and seeking, among other improvements, to provide a bed which may be quickly and easily adj usted into and out of position for use, will be safe and comfortable when used as a bed, and which when not in such use will present the appearance of an ordinary article of furniture,such as a bureau or dresser; and the invention consists in certain novel construc tions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my folding bed adjusted for use as a bed. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the bed partly folded. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the bed folded. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view showing a part of the upright head-frame, the guide-rod, and one of the hangers which support the bed proper. Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the wall-stops.

My folding bed includes, as shown, the upright head section or frame A, the bed proper, B, and the foot-section G. In practice I prefer to make the foot-section O in the form of a case of drawers to serve as the body of a bureau or dresser and the upright frame A with the mirror D to complete the bureau representation and adapt the article to serve as a dresser when adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 3. n

In use as a bed the frame A rests at its base upon the floor, and, being free of rollers, forms a firm steady support for the head of the bed proper. At its top the frame A has the wall-stops E, which are connected adjustably with the frame A, so that they may be set to cause their ends E to bear against the wall and so aid in steadying the bed in position, the ends E being preferably supplied with rubber or other suitably-cushioned rollers to prevent inarring the wall.

The back of the head-frame A is provided with the boards A, which form ways for the rollers F on the lower front corners of the bed proper as the same is raised and lowered in adjusting it, as presently described.

These hangers I-I slide at their upper ends at H on the guide-rods G, are pivoted at H to the bed proper, and have the crank-like arms I-I beyond their pivots, which stop the bed proper in position when it is drawn out for use and slide against the back of the head-section as the bed proper is moved up and down therein. a

When adjusted as shown in Fig. 1, the head of the bed is suspended by these hangers, which also serve to guide the same in itsfolding and unfolding movements. A hinged plateI at the head of the bed proper operates, by folding down on the bedding, to keep the same in place during the folding and unfolding operations. The foot-section C has at its back the projecting frame J, supplied with casters J and furnishing at J pivotal supports for the bed proper. This frame forms an extension of the drawer-section and. has the side brackets J supporting the casters and connected by the cross-beam J which is stayed at its center by the brace-plate J The foot-section, being mounted on casters,

can be pushed toward and from the head-section, so adjusting the bed proper into or out of the said head-section, the bed proper being carried by its hangers, whichslide upon the guide-rods of the section A.

To facilitate the folding of the bed, I provide a spring K, secured at one end to the head-section and having at K, preferably on a cord extension, a button K to engage in a notch at K with the bed proper at the foot thereof. This spring assists in drawing the bed proper toward the head-section and also in tilting the bed proper as it is folded into such head-section, as will be understood. It will be seen that the spring is only attached when 7 it is desired to fold the bed, being detached at other times, as the button will drop out of the notch K when the bed is folded into the head-section, and the drag-line extension beyond the detachable connection, as shown in Fig. 1, facilitates the connection and disconnection of the spring. To lift the headsection clear of the floor and support it on the foot-section when it is desired to move the bed about the floor, I provide the lever L, pivoted to the head-section and bearing upon the bed proper, which may be operated to lift the foot of the head-section clear of the floor, leaving the folding bed supported entirely upon the foot-section O, which is mounted upon casters, as before described.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A folding bed comprising the head-see tion having guide-rods, the bed proper, and the hanger-links pivoted at one end to said bed proper and sliding at their other ends upon the guide-rods and swinging at such sliding ends toward and from the upper end of the bed proper, substantially as set fort-h.

2. A folding bed comprising the head-section having the upright guide-rods upturned at their ends forming seats, the bed proper and the hangers pivoted to the bed proper, sliding on the guide-rods and arranged to rest in the seats formed by the upturned lower ends of said rods substantially as set forth.

3. A folding bed comprising the head-section, the bed proper, and the hangers pivoted to the bed proper having a sliding connection at their upper ends with the head-section and provided with crank-like projections beyond their pivots which form stops by which to limit the outward movement of the bed proper substantially as described.

4:. Theimproved folding bed comprising the head-section having the upright guiderods the bed proper, and the hangers sliding at their upper ends on the guide-rods, pivoted to the bed proper and having the crank-like projections beyond its pivots substantially as set forth.

5. An improved folding bed comprising the head-section the foot-section, the bed proper pivoted to the foot-section and sliding into and out of the head-section and the spring secured to one of said sections and detachably interlocked with the other section whereby it may be adjusted to assist in the folding operation or may be released to prevent such operation accidentally and the drag-line extension whereby to connect and disconnect the spring substantially as set forth.

6. The combination of the head section the foot-section, the bed proper having a notch at its foot and pivoted to the foot-section and sliding into and out of the head-section and the spring secured to the bed-section and provided with a button to engage the notch in the foot of the bed proper substantially as set forth. I

7. A folding hed comprising the head-section normally supported at its base, the bed proper, the foot-section having casters and devices whereby to raise the head-section to support its Weight upon the foot-section substantially as set forth.

8. A folding bed comprising the head-section normally supported at its base, the upright guide-rods in said section, the foot-section having casters, the bed proper pivoted to said foot-section, the hangers pivoted to the bed proper and sliding on the guide-rods of the head-section and the lever whereby the weight of the head-section may be transferred to the foot-section substantially as set forth.
